Hi - I am planning on renting a car this summer in Canada and the US. If you pay for the collision damage waiver it usually increases the car rental price substantially. I wondered if any one had any expericence with separate car rental insurance like worldwideinsure or icarhire. It looks like icarhire insurance is only available for residents of the EU.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks Ladies for all of your comments. They are very helpful. Just curious if any of the UAE credit cards offer collision damage insurance (as far as I know mine don't). I am eligible for a canadian credit card from one of the large banks which includes this type of car insurance, however buried in the fine print is a condition that you need to be a resident so I was concerned that this could potentially be an out for credit card co. Northern Lights I really like Enterprise as well. Dancer 2003, thanks for mentioning the liability insurance issue in the U.S., I wasnt aware of that. It seems most western countries have 3rd party insurance by law but you have to opt in for collision damage waiver. I was planning to get max insurance from car rental co in states (because I don't want to take a chance and its only a short time) and then potentially do a second car rental just for Canada and use worldwidehire (if I feel comfortable) and opt out of the collison damage waiver. Thanks again everyone.

Thanks in advance for any help. Many major credit cards will cover this at no charge as long as you a) decline the car company coverage and b) pay for your entire rental using their card. It is a standard benefit on most large bank cards (Citibank, Capitol one, etc). Check your cards and call the benefits sections.

Hi Hope, Check with the bank that issues your Visa card. Mine offers full collision coverage on all vehicle rentals, which the rental company will also check and confirm. I do not have to purchase additional coverage. Over the years, I've rented with several companies in Canada, all with the same policy. I'm now very loyal to Enterprise Rent-A-Car. [url=https://www.enterprise.ca/en/home.html'>link[/url'> Their rates are the best, by far, and customer service is very personable and great. All vehicles are new, i.e. under six months. Amazingly, they will clearly tell you that Enterprise has no issues with any small 'scratches and dings' or 'wheel scrapes' on the car you've returned. Seriously! I only have experience in B.C. but Enterprise is available across the country. I think you will have to pay extra if you're taking the car across provinces, or into the States. Have a wonderfully Canadian summer holiday!! :) Cheers, NL

Hi Hope, There used to be several companies offering collision damage waiver coverage for us expats. Now it's not so easy to find. I used this company for Canada last year (I am Canadian) but it also covered for the States. http://www.worldwideinsure.com/ One of the issues for driving in the states though is liability insurance - in case you injure another party in an accident and there doesn't seem to be any coverage for that included there. My husband drives in the states when he visits and has had to get the liability insurance through the car rental company. Liability insurance isn't needed in Canada just the collision damage waiver. I have rented from Hertz at the airport in Toronto and they actually have some pretty good rates which includes the insurance if you become a 'gold member' - no extra payment necessary! However this varies depending on which area you are renting from - I then rented in my home town in BC, Canada and nothing was included so I had to use the supplemental insurance. If this all sounds confusing - let me know!

Hi Hope, I guess it depends on where exactly is your starting point when you start to rent a car. since you are a holding a UAE drivers licence you will probably be able to use this to drive in Canada for a short period after you arrive. If you plan to use a foreign driver’s licence in Canada, you should get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your home country. An IDP will give you a translation of your licence into French and English. :) and usually car rentals in Canada will offer you car insurance etc depends on what province in Canada because it varies in different Canada Region. i think it is gonna be the same in the US. Have fun and enjoy. summer is a perfect time to visit Canada especially in Vancouver and Montreal! :D Hope that helps. Cheers!
