I think it really does depend on who takes the car in and what registration centre you use... but when it comes to tyres never take a chance, its not worth it... a blow out is very scary and very dangerous...

I bought new tyres and the beeps sold me out of date ones! Went to fester my car where it failed because out of date tyres showed them the receipt where Tyres were few days old they said tough out of date must be changed. Went back to the shop threatening police action they gave me new tyres within date and I passed

I think you also have to consider the integrity of the tyre and its compound. I recently had to change my tyres and our service centre said that we must check the dates of the tyres when we purchased as if they expired or were more than 2 years old they wouldnt pass registration. I got a price for nearly 2K cheaper than he was quoting but on further inspection they were to expire in a year meaning I would be up for the 7k again. The compound was completely different and would not survive the extreme heat here, we ended up getting our service guy to resolve.Honestly I wouldnt risk my own safety or that of others just to get a few more miles out of a tyre. On another note, my car failed registration for a sticker of the southern cross on the back window and clear tinting on the front window.

yes its the law here, they will not pass your car even if they are under 3 years old if they are worn out etc.... but one thing you need to work on your car is the brakes and the tyres......

more importantly; one of the factors that effects the integrity of tyres is heat - i change my tyres every year. I would be very worried about tyres that were over three years old; especially in this climate.

ok, just to confuse things - my car was re-registered in december - according to the date on the tyres - they were past their expiry by 10 months - but the car passed?

My friend bought a 'new' car a couple of months ago, and on going to do the handover at the RTA, they were told as the tyres were over 3 years they would not process the paperwork - he struck a deal with the seller to put decent tyres on (the seller would have put the cheapest on, obviously, to get it processed) and my friend paid the difference for better tyres, and then they went and got the transfer done. So not an urban myth from my experience. Having witnessed multiple blow-outs on the road to AD most days, I wouldn't hesitate to change every three (if not two) seasons.
