Thanks for all the replies ladies.I appreciate it. Will have to suck it up I suppose! The principal is pretty rigid in the school and wont back down lightly so hey ho. Think its ridiculous though! It means buying more PE kit and more uniform for two! I wish they would consider these things when making these decisions. No mention of this at all before we broke up for Summer AND there is a new PE kit that again was not mentioned before end of June!!!!
Mine changes at school and this included in the 30 minute PE lesson once a week held in an upstairs corridor!!! No swimming as pool closed due to no changing facilities approved by authorities, no art, no ICT to date! Where are you having three PE lessons a week?
Mine was allowed to wear PE kit into school while at nursery, but once at Reception they want them to learn independance and so they have to change at school.
Ours wear PE kit to school twice a week and i found that really strange - in the UK i'd never heard of doing that - the kids always change in school. To be honest i didn't like it at first as it felt unhygienic to be wearing PE clothes the rest of the day but now i actually think it's more convenient. Still not convinced on the hygiene issue though...
I think the schools are in cahoots with the uniform suppliers as the Lost Property is enormous when this ridiculous policy is implemented. For me school is about academics, sports, the arts, community, social side, etc. So many things but not how well kids get changed!
Plus it adds to my washing/ironing piles so I'm not happy!!
I was just about to post something similar to Ansie's reply. Our kids have PE 4 times a week in Primary (2 swimming, 1 hall, 1 field) and they are also formally assessed on how "organised they are with their PE kit". If they have PE before the first break, they go to school in their PE clothes, if only after the first break, they change at school. For swimming they always change at school.
This is what our Head Mistress had to say about little ones changing into PE uniform at school:
Changing clothes is part of the learning experience for children of that age. It requires fine motor skills, organizational skills, concentration and focus. Children learn to take care of their belongings and do time management.
Even though a 5 year old can change his own clothes at home where he is focused, with little distraction and maybe a one-on-one adult supervision, it is a lot different to do that same thing when you are surrounded by 20 other children who would all rather play than putting on shoes...
I think your child is learning a lot and it should be encouraged.
Concerning the art: It was probably only the first or second art class of the year. Maybe the teacher wanted to assess their pencil holding skills, their imagination, their color recognition, etc. Every lesson has a Learning Outcome (LO). It might be a good idea to ask the teacher to explain the LO's of every lesson to you. Maybe she can send an email to all the parents weekly or monthly explaining what is expected from the children in every subject.
Hi Delvin
My daughter wears her uniform to school then changes for PE at school.
Structured art classes are important in order to acquire a visual art literacy early on. Ask the teacher, maybe it was just a bad day.
DS goes to ***, and they have to wear PE uniform to school.
which school is you lil one goes to?
maybe you can discuss this with the school.

Lil miss changes for PE. This morning she did wear her kit to school as PE is her first lesson, and she'll change after into her uniform...this was at her instigation. As soon as the children hit year1 at our school they change for PE, foundation does not.
And, yes. We have structured art classes.
My kids change into PE uniforms and they are 7, no issues. The teacher allows them to leave their trainers at school, they just need to bring in the PE uniform.
My children have been changing for pe in school since they were 3 yrs old. I dont see any problem with that. I also changed at school all my school life.
At 5 yrs old there shouldn't be hardly anytime wasted, children of that age should follow instruction and change clothes by themselves quickly.
Also my eldest who's now in yr 6 has never had proper art classes since yr 2 here. They will do art from high school yr 7.
Hi Ladies, just wondering do your children change in school for PE or do they were their PE uniforms to school on PE days please? In my children's school, a new policy of changing in school for PE is being implemented next week. Im not happy about this as my 2 have PE 3 days per week . It s a lot more convenient for all concerned to wear the PE uniform to school in my opinion. Also, one of my children is only 5 and I feel too much class time will be wasted with this age group changing. Is this a common policy in schools here?? Thank you. Actually while Im at it, do your children have proper structured Art classes.....my child in year 3 doesn't (a double art period this week consisted of blank paper and colouring pencils in the classroom)! Any feedback appreciated.
