Thank you to the ladies who replied with the very helpful advice. I went to the Al Manara branch yesterday afternoon and the whole process took less than 30 minutes. During Ramadan they are open 9am to 6pm, I arrived just after 4pm and it was very quiet. I took old and new passport, Emirates ID, marriage certificate and driving licence. I explained that I wanted a new licence to show my married surname and he only asked to see Emirates ID and driving licence. It would have cost 120 Dhs but I also had an outstanding speeding fine which I had to pay.

Catawba, I just wanted to check the Ramadan hours you quoted are 9am to 6pm everyday (except Friday)? I was planning to go tomorrow after 4pm but the website says they are only open 9am to 2pm and I don't want a wasted journey. Will they be open on Saturday?

No eye test as my licence was valid until 2022 so I presume the eye test doesn't need repeating until then :)

Hi I changed my name on my license today. I went to the Al Manara Centre with my old license, passport and visa and Emirates ID. They needed copies of those documents and I paid 120dhs. It was done really quickly taking 20 minutes in all. Hope this helps :) Very helpful, thank you. Did you need to do the eye test?

My name on my passport (married) and licence don't match and haven't for over 5 years (the visa didn't match for 3 years cause they printed it wrong and said no need to change it :) I have re registered my car, bought a new car and claimed on the insurance without anyone saying anything. Are you sure you really have to do it? Ask the insurance again you might get another answer! I got the insurance renewal through last week and a reminder again today so I emailed to ask how do I amend the name on the policy and they said the policy will only be issued with the same name as the driving licence. I was worried that now my new passport, visa and Emirates ID show my married name I would need to process the car insurance as the same? My licence and car reg are in my maiden name, passport, visa and ID in married name, no one at the rta or insurance has ever asked about it so I never bothered to change it. When my licence expires later this year I will.

I lost my drivers license and went this morning to have it replaced. My old license was in my maiden name but like you, my current passport, visa and Emirates ID are all in my married name. I was really worried they wouldn't issue a new license when the name was different to that on all my other documentation and I'd have to jump through hoops to change it. I didn't even mention it as I didn't want to bring it to their attention if they didn't notice.....the lady helping me didn't bat an eyelash and automatically updated my replacement license to reflect the name on my Emirates ID. Can't promise that if you go in specifically to change your name the process won't be different but it was not an issue today at all for a lost license (hint?). Despite reading on many different sites (including this one) that I would need a myriad of documents (as well as new photos and eye test since my license was over 5 years old) this was not the case. I went to two places to get an eye test only to find out I didn't need one. The only thing they asked for was my Emirates ID. No new eye test and no recent photo (they automatically updated the photo on my license using the photo from my Emirates ID). Having said that, I took copies of my passport, visa, ID, old maiden name passport and husband's passport and visa just in case. Always good to be prepared here! I went to the new Al Manara Municipality Centre on SZR at 11:15 this morning. I was out 20 minutes later. Could not have been simpler. During Ramadan their hours are 9:00-18:00. It is worth calling the RTA just to get the most up to date information. They were very helpful when at the second clueless optician this morning I rang to find out what I needed. They confirmed I needed nothing but my Emirates ID and directed me to the nearest appropriate centre (thankfully because I was headed to Al Barsha which issues new licenses according to RTA website but in reality no longer provides the service). I was prepared for a couple of hours waiting at best and multiple trips at worst and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Good luck! edited by Catawba KSE on 09/07/2014 Thank you! Very helpful

Yorky whose sponsorship are you on? I said DH as I assumed his (sorry!). As your sponsor has to authorise you to have a DL then it is better to get any change signed by the person on the TL if it's a company, and if so you will also need to take a copy of the TL and the passport/visa copy of that person. Better to take everything you can think of :) Your right, best to be over prepared! I will get work to provide the documents and head over next week. Fingers crossed it's not too difficult!

Hi Yorky I haven't done this but suggest taking: Letter from DH confirming the change (mentioning PP numbers & DL number) & signed by him Fill out the form again just in case, remember DH has to sign this too (don't think you will need this though) PP Emirates ID I don't think you'll need to do an eye test either. Should be quite a quick procedure. Thanks for the reply. I was going to take passport with visa page, Emirates ID and a copy of the marriage certificate. Do you think I will still need a letter from DH even though I'm not under his sponsorship? If anyone knows the. Opening times during Ramadan that would also be very helpful. Thanks :) Also if anyone can confirm which opticians do the eye test. I was thinking of getting that done anyway so if it is required I have everything ready. edited by Yorky on 09/07/2014

If anyone has changed their name on their UAE driving licence I would be very grateful if you could share the procedure for doing this. I want my new licence to show my married name (I cannot insure the car unless the driving licence shows the correct name). I have my visa and Emirates ID already changed but what other documents will I need to provide? Also will I need to do another eye test? Can this be done at any optician? I only have a few weeks to do this before my insurance expires so any information is much appreciated as I guess the places I need to visit will also be working shorter hours during Ramadan. TIA
