so sad that Common Sense and Common Courtesy can't travel together isn' it! Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). But sadly overtime his health began to deteriorate. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student - but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live when any talk of religion, the Lord’s Prayer or Christmas became contraband at school, churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and if you did the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone. Brilliant. I used to try and use the metro as much as possible but only if I really have too....because of the rudeness of the users, and I'm talking about the 'Women Only' section! Pushing, shoving to get on/off, extremely loud chatter on mobile phones and the last straw was sitting on the side seat, myself and three others, then another woman comes along and literally squeezes herself onto the seat as well, without even an 'excuse me'! There was no space!!! Just pure selfish and I'm fed up with it :( I has the opposite yesterday-a row of petite Filipino girls all sqeezed up to make room for not so petite me - so it is not all bad! Mnd you I never bother with the Ladies Only carriage as have found I am far more likely to be offered a seat in the other carriages.

I hate the whole in and out the lift thing. Was in one the other day and when the doors open, a guy is standing right in front of them. I'm like, er so are you going to let me out then? Although it has to be said some people are very nice, on a couple of occasions recently I've been at the supermarket and only picked up a couple of things and the people in front who had loads, let me go first.

i love how kids can show up adults! :D Yup, and my DS did it big style many years ago when a guy who was walking in front of us going along our main street dropped a cigarette packet. Before I could say cheese, my 3 year old DS pulled away from my hand, picked up the offending pack and stood in front of the guy saying, "you're a bad man, put that in the bin"!!!!!! HE DID!!!! Grinned back at me and said "well that's me told"!!!

Some woman took the toy out of my basket and raced off after her child shouting back, "Sorry! I'm in a hurry." WTF? :\: That is a smackable offense. Yup, I would have given her a huge earful too! Anyhow, in and out of lifts, metro, etc... I'm fortunate to generally be wielding a buggy that has a pointy bit at the front and a decent amount of momentum when it gets going, so if I need to get off/out and am being rugby tackled by in-coming people, they literally get run over, generally a milisecond after I say "excuse me". DH berates me for it, but hey. On the other hand, if I'm waiting to get in/on, I use it as a life lesson for my 3 year old and in a loud voice tell her that we have to let the people off first - now she knows to stand by the side and make room, so I don't need to tell her any more, but you'd be amazed at how some people think twice about their inconsiderate actions when a toddler is being more polite than they are. It also helps that DD plays the game, so to speak and generally says something like "are they naughty for pushing?!" in a very loud voice! Lol! Lil miss was hugely miffed one weekend in ab dabs when she was pushed in front of in a very busy ice cream que (by a couple of adults). She was complaining loudly and very pointedly to me about it, and being rather hot and harrassed I just tried to play the incident down, by saying it didnt matter, never mind etc. So she slots herself in the que 2 places up, and I'm like, get back here, and she's like but you said it didnt matter! Gah! Pushy in people got the point and let us back into our origonal place though :)

Grrr so im in a lift and when my floor arrives I attempt to get out when a woman decides its more important for her to get in than for me to get out first.... hello your not gonna go anywhere until I get out so why not just wait! Is it just me or does this seem to happen all the time! Talking about common courtosy, we went out of dinner the other night, a REALLY rude lady in front of us was getting into a golf cart to be taken to her hotel with her grandchild and son or something, so we saw the golf cart she was getting into was full, so went to the next one, well madam couldn't fit on the golf cart in front, so as we were stepping onto our one, she literally elbowed her way through and shoved us out the way so that she could sit on it! we were gobbsmacked as there was 1. enough room for all of us on this golf cart, and 2 there was an empty one right behind the one we were getting on!

Me again with the 'don't let it do your head in' line. Such selfish rudeness is not Dubai's alone. I'm in Australia and was shopping the other day for my daughter's birthday present. Just as an aside after reading that CT (the bit about schools etc) I was reading on yahoo news yesterday that child care centers in oz will be fined if the children take part in any religious activities, such as tree decorating or easter egg hunts. That can't be right surely? Easter egg hunt all planned to go ahead at my daughter's childcare centre. :) There is a little common sense left in the world.

all the time over here! i refuse to move, stand in the door and look at the floor. if they still dont get it, then i look up and say "please let me out". same thing happens when you enter/exit the metro. people just dont know ... The metro is the worst. We took it last night. Were first in line for the Gold Class and a few little cheeky teens pushed their way through the people that were trying to get off just to claim the last few seats in the section. After a few min they looked at me with my baby and asked if I would like a seat. Told them no that they must have had some serious medical problem that required them to be so rude and pushy and bypass the entire line that was qued up before they ran up the escalator so they could sit down. They just stared at me blankly.. that's what takes the cake ... when you say something and they stare like you're from out of space!

Metro and buses here are awful for that. I told one lady the other day she needed to let me out first, she looked at me as I would be ET. My husband says that this is because certain cultures do not have the same concept of personal space and they are used to live, travel and work alltogether so for them it is normal to push others or to be in your way... I try to understand it in that way but it drives me mad. I cannot really live in a society that does not respect your personal space! Yes, it's strange, I used to find that even in Switzerland, whereas in London I was used to travelling by tube or rush-hour suburban trains and still managed to keep my personal space! Mind you, that was an awfully long time ago!

At Festival City once: me pushing baby in pram and pulling along a trolly with shopping and toddler. Pushed the button for the lift and as the lift doors opened. 4 men barged through, got in, looked at me...realizing there was no more space for me and just shrugged their shoulders and closed the doors. I was FUMING!

I try to understand it in that way but it drives me mad. I cannot really live in a society that does not respect your personal space!
