It gets even better... They now keep the landlord's AND the tenant's deposits! So if you rent out your property, you don't get anything back, but they still take the deposit from the tenant. Effectively, they are holding Dhs 8000 and Dhs 4000 in deposits for each villa and apartment respectively. No wonder they have a Dhs 4 billion profit!
And, you are right, GE, they used to disconnect you only after 3 months of non-payment. Now it's 14 days.
Can't be doing too badly - profit was 4.4 billion dirhams (after tax) last year.

Yup oldtimer, that's what we're facing at the minute. Setting up, signed our tenancy contract last week, gave our agent fees to help set DEWA up for us and then we got an email this AM saying it had doubled. If [i'>only[/i'> we had found our apartment two weeks earlier.....
They must have been stung by a lot of people defaulting on bills to put it up so much. I'm just making the point that for any new arrivals in Dubai the start up costs are shocking. And if you add the cost of sponsoring a maid with deposit and health insurance, buying cars, paying rent a year in advance etc Moving here requires a bucket of cash to begin with!
But it is to cover bills. For example if someone left the country owing a month's bill in a large villa that had a pool and a/c on all day etc - the bill would be more than 2k. So you can see why it is necessary.
Yes, AED4000!!! Not even price increase by stealth, let's just double it! Only in Dubai :-) So add that to some landlords asking for 10% security deposit for villa, agency fees of 5%, Ejari …. it's a nightmare!
Thanks Geordie! Just cautious they weren't pulling a fast one.. It's steep though right!? Or is it just me! They should really update the [url=http://www.dewa.gov.ae/faq/faq.aspx'>DEWA site[/url'> but I guess that's asking too much
No, that's correct. it came into force on 21st September. All deposits have doubled and the admin fee is AED110. Apparently the application forms have also changed, so make sure you get the new one that asks for your residency visa number and not your passport number.
Has anyone set up their DEWA connection very recently? Our estate agent has just informed us that the DEWA Security Deposit is now 2000k for flats, and 4000k for villas/houses. I can't find anything on any government website about an increase - as far as I was aware its 1k for flats, and 2k for villas?
