Hi ladies

I am 21 weeks pg and planning to fly to Paris on Friday. I am already quite big so I guess it's best to have a doctor's letter just in case they ask. I am delivering at AW and went to Al Badaa for my first OB appt yesterday. It went well and I had a basic scan in the OB office. Stupidly, I forgot to ask for the letter during the appt as I had my 2 kids with me and there was so much going on. I only remembered afterwards and ran back to ask the OB, although she was dealing with someone else by then. She quickly told me that I needed to see my private OB for a more thorough scan to check the placenta before flying (??). I wonder whether she just didn't have the time and said that to get out of it (lol).

I'm not sure i want to go back to my private OB who is really expensive and may use it as an excuse to do all sorts of tests etc.

So my question is... do you actually need a full scan before flying? Also, as I just had a full check-up yesterday (with urine test etc) is it possible for a GP at a govt clinic to access these records and write me a letter?

I've just paid 5k for the antenatal package and don't fancy paying for a load of other tests which I don't need. Any ideas?

Thanks,
KB

the letter has to be written within 48 hours I was told by Etihad, so best check with the airline.

I fly several times to Paris when I was pregnant and they never asked me any letter. But I flied with Emirates and followed their instructions. So I got the letter only after I entered the 29th week of pregnancy. Before that, I used to bring me the documents showing the duration of my pregnancy, and never had any issue. The letter that you will have tomorrow cannot be used when you will come back from Paris.

Thanks again. I went back to Al Badaa to a see a GP but she couldn't give me a letter. Unfortunately she was being conscientious (lol) and called my OB to check it was ok with her. Of course the OB reiterated what she said yesterday - i.e. that I needed a detailed a scan. But I have to say the GP was v helpful and made several phone calls on my behalf to see whether AW could scan me but to no avail (they will only do it in an emergency). After that I went to see my private OB but they quoted me AED620 + consultation fees. There is no way I'm paying that for a scan I don't need so I think tomorrow I will try the Iranian to see if I can get the letter more cheaply! I just checked the Etihad website and apparently you don't need a medical cert till 28 weeks BUT I look a good bit further on than I am and I don't want to risk being turned away - esp on the way back as I'll be 2 weeks further on by then. A friend of mine was asked for a letter at 20 weeks and she was tiny! Will let you know how I get on...

General rule with flying is that after 28 weeks you need a letter from your Dr. After 28 weeks you will need to get a letter from the airline's doctor. some will allow you to fly up u til 34 weeksbjt most is only 32! Hope that helps! As long as you have something that proves you are not 28 weeks yet then it should be fine as long as you are healthy!

Great thanks for your helpful responses. I think I will just go back to Al Badaa, ask to see a GP and hope for the best. Cheers x

No, i didnt have a scan to get my flight letter. Just went to my GP who wrote me a letter stating that id had a 'normal' pregnancy thus far and that she was happy to let my fly, signed by her and stamped by the surgery.

no you don't scientist are not even clear on weather these scans are even safe for our babies, i know some moms that even went their whole pregnancy without any ultrasounds. also many airline require that you do not fly after 32 weeks, and usually thats when you give a note. but hey you may be treated better if its brought to their attention that you are preggers. good luck on your flight and wear those flight stockings. : )
