a Canadian who loves to cook.

I was thinking of giving a voucher for a gourmet food shop (any recommendations greatly appreciated) and a very nice cookbook.

Don't know if I should go for a US cookbook or British, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Would like something a little bit different, but not too fancy either.

This is a wonderful culinary and social history book, by Nadia Sawalha: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stuffed-Vine-Leaves-Saved-Life/dp/0385616937/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321383828&sr=8-1-spell So is this, in a different way: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Larousse-Gastronomique-Greatest-Cookery-Encyclopedia/dp/0600602354/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321384242&sr=1-3 And this - an Omelette and a Glass of Wine - so evocative and the reason the English expanded beyond eel pie and mash or fish and chips - neither of which is bad, just that this is better, imnsho! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Omelette-Glass-Wine-Elizabeth-David/dp/1906502358/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321384145&sr=1-1

One of my favourite cook books is Falling Cloudberries by Tessa Kiros. It is a collection of recipes from her family, a mix of greek, finish, Italian, south african and is beautifully written. She was born in London and grew up as an expat in South Africa, so it's got a nice little expat element to it too. It is also beautifully photographed and illustrated (and has yummy food!). This sounds amazing!

An ipad including many cooking apps. Way worth it than another heavy book.

I have the other Leon cookbook and love it. It was given as a gift to my sister-in-law and I liked it so much had to buy it myself. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leon-Ingredients-Recipes-Allegra-McEvedy/dp/1840915021/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321354593&sr=1-1 Alternatively, I just bought 'When Suzanne Cooks' and I'm really enjoying the recipes in it. It is an Arabian cookbook but the author emigrated to Canada when she was young so the recipes have a nice modern twist. She now lives in Dubai so it might be nice gift reflecting recipes of the region for another Canadian living in Dubai? http://www.suzannehusseini.com/joy-of-cooking/

I was given the second Leon cookbook as a gift. It is gorgeous - beautiful, simple homely food, natural and organic-ish focused (not junk-y). It's a beautifully designed book too - every page is gorgeous to look at. I have the second one 'naturally fast food', but i think there are three. Heres the link if you want to check it out: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leon-Naturally-Fast-Food-Book/dp/1840915560/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b
