I'm going to the UK for over a month and need to know what the 'rules' are!

If you are referring to torrents I think it is providing the programme is not for sale on dvd. In the UK programmes are legal to download on sites such as UKNova as their torrents are not for commercial release. Nay, nay, and thrice nay :) ANY kind of torrenting of TV programmes is 100% illegal. It's irrelevant whether the programme is available on DVD or not, it's still a copyrighted work and by torrenting you are contributing to the infringement of that copyright. UKNova has no legal status at all. As a matter of policy they don't allow any programmes that are available to buy, but that doesn't make the sharing of the programmes they do carry any less illegal. If the BBC, ITV etc wanted to close them down they could. We download programmes from torrent sites all the time, but we're under no illusions about the legality of it ;)

Ugh, I am obviously not good with the lingo, Saltire! :) There is NO internet connection in the flat. At all. Famn - that's what I want, I guess, a pre-paid dongle - but do they come in different bundles/speeds, etc? I cannot drill down far enough in the O2 website to understand it. Sure, you can buy them but not the cheapest way to use your computer. You might be best asking for advice in the shops when you get to the UK. :)

Yes.. they usually come in blocks - ie. 100MB, 250MB, 1GB and expire in say 1 month.. If you run out you can often topup but some of them you can't. Also, the service provider is important because at my Aunt's house in the border region I have to take the laptop up the hill and sit amongst her sheep to get my mail!! In the suburbs and other destinations I get good signal with Vodaphone, but my mother's mobile is Orange and her signal isn't so good at some of my relative's houses.. sooooo... you will need to think about how much you might use and the duration of your trip, and which provider will have the best coverage. I usually find that 4 weeks I can buy 1 GB data for laptop and for my iphone I get Vodaphone topup and buy 250MB data plan over 30 days. Cheers! F x

Ahhh... I see... you can get prepaid dongles from most of the telephony places... or if you have an iphone you can use the new updated software to access the "Personal Hotspot" function... but you will need a UK sim with data plan otherwise it will cost a bomb!

No, sorry I am not being clear - they use their own dongle when they are there, in the flat! If I remember correctly before we had wifi at home we had several dongles, not just one. :)

So they have internet in the holiday home, just not wifi. Do they not have a spare dongle or can they get one from the company that supplies their router? :) edited by Saltire on 20/03/2011

Thanks so much! (Sanddy, trying to get me in trouble....:)) I just don't even know where to begin to buy a dongle. Apparently the O2 works well in their FLAT (;)) so I will get that - but don't know how much access I will need, etc if I want to watch TV. Any experience with dongles out there?

Ah, I am speaking about downloading American programs. So great to know that I can watch TV on the laptop though - through the dongle! If I am staying in the condo of someone who has a TV licence, do I need one as well, or can I use theirs? Technically, it is possible, depending on the circumstances of you staying there but in reality if the premises has a licence then you will be fine. ps. we don't call them condos in the UK, they are flats or apartments. :)

Are you talking about downloading UK television programmes? It is legal but if you are watching them live, even on your computer you need a TV Licence to do so. :)

You'll be able to watch TV through your 'puter with websites such as http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv and http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/ or is that not what you meant?
