Driving experience, made me realize how lucky I am!

I normally drive a Land Rover, well Range Rover Sport actually and this week it went belly up on the school run, the only car I could hire was a 2004 Mitsibushi Lancer (not silver thank goodness!) and I tell you what, what a difference it makes the way people on the road treat you. They roar up behind you, intimidate you, flash you (because with air con on you really can't go very fast!), and this was all just the other mums!
I am sure I have done the same myself, and this has been a real life lesson, I even joked to the rental agent when I returned it today, everyone should have to drive a small car for a week to see just how blinking intimidating the cars on the road are.
I have been up and down emirates road to work and back, school run and back, and I tell you I was amazed by how different the experience was. I will show a lot more consideration in the future and just thought I would mention it here, I hope you never have to have your rear differential collapse on the 311 to realize it!
Eid Mubarak

Range Rover drivers, in a league of your own. Great learning curve to realise there are actually other cars on the road. Bad drivers are just that regardless of car driven.

DH really wants to get a 'cool' car so that we'll have more respect on the roads, but I refuse to put us in debt so that some small minded t*ssers will show 'respect'. :D Hear hear!

We've currently got a hire car whilst we decide what to do re our cars, its a silver corolla. I hadn't realised silver was a bad colour ;) So are you telling me that I won't be quite so intimidated and flashed at when/if hubby gets his 4x4? On saying that, I'm probably going to get myself a Yaris for going to the shops and playdates. And just keep out of everyones way. Or borrow dh's car for longer trips that involve the SZR ;) edited by LoopyLoo on 04/11/2011

We have an old 4x4 which isn't in the 'flash' category by any means :) We get this aaaaall the time. I kind of miss our Mini S, because when people would flash and be intimidating (thinking you're in a rubbish little car) I'd just knock it down a gear and leave them eating my dust while laughing (maniacally). DH really wants to get a 'cool' car so that we'll have more respect on the roads, but I refuse to put us in debt so that some small minded t*ssers will show 'respect'. :D

I can relate, but I'm confused about mentioning the colour silver. Our car is silver. What does this mean? :0

I drive a 'small' car that is quite low to the ground. When a 4x4 is behind me, it's front grill takes up the whole of my back windscreen. It is extremely intimidating!

Yes, driving a small car does put things into perspective. When we first came here we rented a Nissan Tiida. Driving on these roads for the first time was such a scary experience! Suddenly I was driving a left hand drive car, on the "wrong" side of the road, on roads that I have never been on! Add to that the tailgating, flashing, pushy Dubai road users, and you have a recipe for a nervous breakdown! I remember admiring the other ladies driving so confidently. Luckily I have a very patient DH who took me driving at night when the roads were quiet(er). (He probably had more than one secret mini-breakdown during these outings). Then we got me a 4x4, and driving became easier, but I still have to shake my head in disbelief at some of the "stunt drivers" on our roads. And yes, parking is the new challenge...

Eid Mubarak Great that someone actually gave words to what I always feel. We have a RR sports, and a Honda Accord.. I keep telling my hubby that I need to paste a note at the accord saying "My other car is a RR"..

hehehe reading this I'm having a chuckle to myself...I've been driving my 'silver' hired car for the past 2 months now...going into my third month ( because of course now we can buy a car we can't decide on which BIG INTIMIDATING car to buy lol) didn't realise having the air con on slowed the car down though....that's why it takes me forever to pick up speed! I thought it was an automatic thing having come straight from driving a manual or stick shift .... what's that saying about the size of a mans car ;) what would be the female version on that?

Today we were in a Yaris ... rent a car (not that we have our own car just yet! ;)) .... in Dubai Mall waiting in the never ending queue for the SZR exit (I am not sure why the powers of Dubai Mall thought it would be a good idea to have floors and floors of parking and one exit? Or are there more exits that none of the drivers are aware of?) . And we felt like a little kitten being bullied by a bunch of ferocious dogs! Ok .. that was a weird comparison ... but really thats how I felt!! All the 4x4s were flashing, pushing, shoving, honking and basically scaring the wits out of us (and we had 3 children in our car)! Then there was this Maserati that wanted all the cars in front of it to vanish :/: Must have been a VVVVVVVVVVIP shopping in Dubai Mall ;) Money does make people inconsiderate and rude! (There are always exceptions to everything :)) edited by hiccup on 03/11/2011

yep it really does make a difference what car you drive, if you drive a yaris, sunny, civic or lancer they are all usually rental cars and you usually do get "flashed" at, if you drive any sort of sports car or the usual suspect 4x4 then less likely to be flashed at.
