The DVLA video explains the upcoming changes to procedures for hiring cars at home and abroad, from June 7 when the paper counterpart will be scrapped, it will be neceassery to obtain a code from driver records online to provide to car hire companies.

The code will only be valid for three days for the hire company to access records, so its important to know that when arranging a rental for holidays if you plan to use a British licence.

Aren't you meant to use your UAE licence anyway if you have one? Yes, correct, the reason I posted the info is quite a few people on a recent thread were talking about the status of their British licences while resident abroad, so this advisory maybe useful for them if they plan to use It for booking hire cars on holiday.

Aren't you meant to use your UAE licence anyway if you have one? I thought so too. Plus much better to use your UAE licence - if you happen to get any points while driving in the UK it wouldn't be added to your licence :-)

If you don't live in the UK, then yes.

I still have the original paper document - prior to the introduction of the photocard part! To clarify for anyone else in this situation - "Paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998 will remain valid and should not be destroyed."
