We used to get the marbles a lot when we lived in a flat in Singapore. I just assumed it was the Chinese predilection for playing Mahjong late into the evenings. Now I feel guilty for the numerous curses we directed to those people upstairs!

I have heard the marble noise too but not here ( as have never lived in an apartment here) - usually when you are in places with hard tile floors eg hotels/condos in hot parts. I don't believe it is pipes - it is people dropping things - anything! Coins whatever.....:D

I'm over in Motorcity and we have marbles during the day and night, we also have what sounds like someone going up and down the corridor with something on wheels (just heard it again now!) but at odd times 2am, 3 or 4 am and finally we have pipe banging! But who on earth bangs pipes at all hours of the day and night? This building is just odd. Where in Motorcity are you? I moving there at the end of this month. I'm in Foxhill 2 where are you moving to?

My boys at work (yes they read EW) have come to the conclusion that it is the ghosts of the workers killed during the construction of our buildings and villas :\: I know more men than women who read EW... What a horrible thought, the numbers of labourer deaths. I have to say, though, that, now that I've discounted the kids playing marbles at 3 am explanation, the waterpipes/aircon explanation strikes me as more likely. (Though someone did recently send me a link to a Youtube video called 'Ghost in Dubai airport', which did actually give me a bit of a fright!)

This phenomena is really interesting. As I used to hear people having a party in my own house while sleeping in my bedroom which was on the 1st floor in London and the sound was coming from the downstairs part of my house - just below my bedroom.. It used to wake me up at odd hours and I would hear people laughing, chatting, cutlery and crockery noises like a big party was going on when I knew there was nobody there. So pretty weird. And YES marbles and furniture moving as well but in Dubai.

The marbles sound seemed to have been investigated in Singapore- people thought it was ghosts and all sorts- but it's water in pipes and the sound distorted through concrete...have a read at this- quite funny too http://www.api.sg/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=95&Itemid=1 Furniture scraping- will have to google!!

It is so odd - I have always lived in apartments and have lived in 3 different countries and in diffrent parts of the emirates but Dubai is the only place I have ever heard this sound - that is why I was so convinced it was my neighbours.. But the furniture scraping sound used to terrify me when I was a teen / young adult. Used to hear it coming from the kitchen where I lived late at night when I knew that no-one else was there. Just used to put my head under the covers and hoped it would go away!

Gawd, thought it was just me!! We have a lovely gent upstairs from us who is well into his 60s. He lives alone so I'd love to know what on earth he does late at night. Sounds like he's skateboarding across the floor and/or throwing marbles about!!!! Fortunately we don't hear it in our bedroom. Looking forward to getting home to our detached house!! Honestly, this has been happening to me for the last 3 years - i always thought it was the neighbours dropping something - but what??!!! i am glad i am not going mad!

This is weird, I read this last night and when I went to bed, I heard marbles rolling! Since we live in a villa, I decided it must be the wind in the pipes or aircon ducts!!!

OOOHH feel so guilty now.. I sent the watchman up to my neighbours at 1am as I was so sick of being woken by the marbles!! They had always been noisy - assembling furniture late at night when they moved in, clicky clacky heels every morning and evening that I was convinced it was just another noisy irritation from them.. So it seems I sent the watchman up to them for the one thing they were not guilty of! edited by Genie on 19/01/2011

Definitely the pipes - I went and confronted our upstairs neighbours about it several years ago (complete with screaming baby). Their child was fast asleep. They moved out eventually. Then we got 'The Drillers'. Sent DH up that time, they were putting together furniture for months apparently. They moved too. Now we have high-heels at 6am and 11pm (even on the weekends) and chucking-water-over-the-balcony-maid. I think we need to move.

By the way forgot to mention that when I was doing my brief research on google also read that some people who were experiencing this also found scratches on their body when they woke up in the morning. Anyone had the same experience? :\: Really? Can you link to the article please?

Wow! Finally we have a thread about this. Have been hearing marbles falling since the last 7-8 years. Firstly in London in our house and then on moving to Dubai. Was staying in Golden Sands and heard them there as well and now living in Dubai Marina and same thing here as well. Have googled the same and apparently this is becoming more and more common in all parts of the world. From the US, to Europe, Middle East and the Far East. People say it's pipes but then what about the sound of furniture being moved around in the middle of the night. Very weird. Used to happen at late night after midnight but just last week heard it around 5:30 pm and it kept happening for 20 mins and then it stopped. And I do not think it's pipes - just something very weird is happening. edited by inga3 on 19/01/2011 edited by inga3 on 19/01/2011

It sounds like we're definitely in for a treat! We live in a flat now so are used to noise coming from all sides but we also have an 11 month old dd so if the neighbours are up late banging around I let her play with all her noisiest toys (you know the ones mums!) when she wakes up at 6am! I'm glad I've read this thread, I think it may of prevented me from carrying out cruel and unwarranted punishment on my future neighbours! :D

oooh it's like Mythbusters hahaha! Ok the giants- is it like furniture being scraped or banging noises or clip cloppy footsteps? We need more info for our investigation (I do think the scraping sound really is the furnitire but you never know!!)
