I'm cracking up laughing that half of Dubai has clearly been grinding its teeth for years about imaginary marble-dropping!

Us too!! We're in a villa and I've always been happy to blame our neighbours and their son playing marbles until reading this thread!

We had this, too! And we were always lying in bed swearing about the blameless upstairs neighbours! Fortunately we never did actually storm upstairs at 3 am!

Oh wow have just googled it and it's really common....it's something to do with pipes and concrete floors- so we should stop cussing our neighbours- it is really common in Singapore and has become an urban legend apparently- right mystery solved! ETA- I cannot stop laughing now picturing loads of us sat there at night going- "grrrrrr damn those kids and their pesky marbles- why are they still playing at 3am!!!!!"- when after all that it's the pipes/concrete!! Just google "marble dropping sound" and you'll see how common it is and loads of wierd and wonderful explanations for it! edited by Licorice on 18/01/2011

I am convinced we have a family of giants living upstairs - nocturnal ones at that. Every night I dream I'm Jack in the beanstalk running away from giant footstep. Seriously, who needs to walk THAT loudly? Our cat used to be obsessed with marbles - maybe they have a cat that bats them around all night.

Maybe it is the pipes then? Or is marbles at midnight a popular sport? I wish I had gone up before I had moved out- not to have a go or anything but to finally find out what it was!

OMG we used to have the exact same thing too. What is that all about? . So did I! Convinced that my upstairs neighbours were rolling a ball bearing or similar across the floor all night. Got the watchman to go up to them one night even but it was not them - never worked out what it was but it used to wake me up regularly for months. If it's happening in many apartmnet blocks must be something to do with the buildings here... wonder what... rolllerskating rats anyone? (had rats in the roof of somewhere I lived here once, I used to think it was birds on the roof then one day I realised ... birds don't run that fast ) :(

We used to have this - it was the grown ups playing snooker and knocking the balls off the table - usually after a loud party and through till 6am!!

OMG we used to have the exact same thing too. What is that all about? Then again that was the least of our worries as upstairs also used to do regular furniture rearranging(or so it sounded like) after midnight and neighbours on the same floor as us used the hall area as their kids playground, also until quite late. Go figure! I so don't miss apartment living.

I used to have the same noise in my old flat- got me actually wondering if it is marbles or whether it was the pipes or something- same thing as you till very late at night- sounds like a marble being dropped, bouncing a bit and rolling along.... so maybe just maybe it's not marbles? I always wanted to go upstairs and ask but never had the nerve!
