Like anything, these things only become a problem when something goes wrong! It just didn't sound right, the across the road situation, but if you are comfortable that it's not malicious then it's not that dramatic. But next time you are approached by a gardener, yes you should ask him to send the boss of the company round instead (it will cost you the same per month). The boss will sign you up to a proper arrangement. At the moment you really know nothing about this person, who is sponsoring company is, whether or not he is illegal/on the run etc. And in case he IS illegal etc and you are caught hiring him, you'd be subject to fines etc. Sorry for the side track - he just sounded a bit scary! :) PS your flowers def need watering more than once a week in summer!!!

Did your gardener originally just come round and ring your doorbell and you've arranged to pay him 2/3/400 AED a month? Or is it through a company where you are paying his boss and it is through a proper company? It's not that you are doing something illegal, it's that you've mentioned that he is sitting watching you from across the road and that he is being rude to you - that just doesn't sit well with someone who has access to your property and you don't have details of his passport/visa/sponsor etc.

OP, be a little bit careful with this. It sounds like a very casual arrangement and I'm thinking you don't have a proper arrangement in place with a landscaping company (where you are paying a monthly fee/getting receipts etc). Bear in mind that this is AS illegal as hiring a part time maid, you are still subject to fines and if this person has access to your property and something goes missing or whatever then the Police would wonder why he had a key etc. It all just sounds a little bit intimidating with him being rude to you and sitting across the road watching your movements? I'd be a little bit worried if you are doing something (possibly you didn't know) illegal and then you end up in a sticky situation.

You are struggling because you hired someone who has a terrible attitude so no matter how you approach subjects or speak to him it will always end unsatisfactorily. He is the problem. Not you. There are plenty gardeners out there who speak respectfully and explain things if asked. There is no need for things to be like this. Its your choice but personally I would be saying a final goodbye to him.
