Hi

I am planning on getting married in the UK next year. The venues are all provisionally booked, as is the registrar. However, I understand that I have to give notice and that I have to be in the UK for 7 days before I can do this and provide proof of residence in the UK. Has anyone else had to do this and how easy was it? I was only renting in the UK so don't have a permanent address apart from my folks place which is in a different county to where I am getting married, not sure whether this matters?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

do you get any bank statements etc sent to your parents' address? if so, that'll suffice. Just been through the same thing myself... too much paperwork :(

If it's not rented out, your OH should have council tax paperwork which will make everything easy for him to satisfy residency requirements (that's what we did for my DH). It might be best for you to call the council and find out if your driving licence will suffice. Otherwise you might need to do what cleanfreak suggested and go to your parents'. Regarding tax, never say never, but in my experience the various departments do not speak to each other.

Thanks for all you advice! Yes we are both British. We both lived in the area where we are planning on getting married prior to moving to Dubai (although that was a good few years ago) but neither of us are originally from that area. I am sure that I can dig out a phone bill or something from the place where I was renting, in fact I think my UK driving license uses that address . My OH actually owns the property he was living in (it is no reneted out) so should have paperwork, etc. I presume that it will not affect his non-residency status for tax purposes if he uses that address?

Hi Lala81 We got married in the UK in May. There are a few things to take into account. Firstly are you & DH both British? It will be a different process if you are not. Secondly, as you are getting married by a registrar and not in a church, you both need to give notice of marriage at the council/borough in which you live - not the one where you are getting married. You will each need to do this. The rules state you have to do it a minimum of 16 days before the wedding, but it can take a fair bit of time to get an appointment so do not leave it till the last minute - the piece of paper is valid for a year. You will need to show proof of residency (ie bank statements), but they will have all the info on the council website. One thing I found is they were a bit suspicious as we were out of the country while arranging it, but they couldn't be more helpful once I was there in person.

I got married December last year in the Uk. We had to allow 10days, think it was £60 ish for the paper work and all i took was a mobile phone bill and my passport - this was enough. I too was only renting.

hi lala81 I did this 18 months ago. Is very simple. Like Div said, you are best calling the council where your parents are located (the registry section) and asking them. basically you need to be in the country for 7 days, it doesnt matter where you stay as long as that person writes a letter confirming that you are staying with them for 7 days. It doesnt matter if it is a different county, I got registered in a different county also. anyway - just give them a call but it is very simple. I think you also need to take your flight tickets to prove time in country.

You and your partner need to give notice in the area that you are registered (borough/council). You need to call the council and book it - you can do it from here I believe. Then both of you will have to attend an interview end of which your wish to marry will be registred and you will have to wait 16 days to get the paperwork back which you will need to present on the day of your marriage. (this paper can be collected by one of you) You can find all the info on your(your friends) council website. The best would be to phone the council you want to give the notice/get married and find outall the info from them. You were only renting there but you had the bills to pay, or the bank account for that address - that's the proof of address. Not sure how you can get any proof by staying there for 7 days, sorry. Or you may contact the British Embassy, they should know all the details. I guess one of you holds british passport..? <em>edited by Div on 18/10/2011</em>
