hi guys,

Long story short is I am going to LA next week as I have been invited by my friend whom I have known all my life. We are not that close any more but it is a reunion of sorts. Anyway, his family are paying for my trip as part of his birthday gift and its business class flight, Bellagio in Las Vegas and the London in West Hollywood.

I would like to buy something to take, just a couple of little things as a gesture. I will of course take them for dinner etc but I was thinking maybe to get his mum and sister a pashmina and something and something for his dad but I have NO idea what!

Please help a cow out here!

Thanks

Carrying on from BWD's idea, something about Wilfred Thesiger, "A Life in Pictures", maybe?

Expensive trip - expensive present! Dubai grew out of the pearl trade - earings? Lovely colourful coffee table book on Dubai? Regional themed print? Lynda Shepherd's gallery on the corner of 77b road and Jumeirah Beach Road has some lovely art work beautifully framed along with regional gifts.

This is what I brought for presents when we went to the US: - home decor, something nice and arabic that you can't find in the US. My experience with Americans is that they love things that come from around the world. Dagger in a frame is a good idea. - Shisha (if they don't use it it's a nice piece to decorate the house) - Oud parfume is a really good idea. I haven't bought oud yet because I had to buy lot of presents and it would have been expensive but perfume has always been very popular with the women when we brought them some years ago ("normal" perfume from duty free shops) - Pashmina - buy good quality not those really thin ones. We brought pashmina from India and everyone was really happy with it From Asia I also brought nice embroidered table cloths to the States. They were really popular. People loved them. We brought some dates too but no one liked it...

I would maybe get a nice painting for them - something that portrays dubai, camels or bedoiuns (?spelt right) or of arabic buildings. A tablecloth or table runner is also a nice idea. If you dont manage to find anything then buy the lady a huge bunch of flowers and get the guy cigars and take them out for a lush dinner. If they have paid out for a first class ticket then maybe they are not expecting pay-back? A gesture of goodwill is always nice though.

I would get them something nice, a tiffany something, a Cartier pen set, anything that they can keep really. They are really going to a lot of expense for you so I would get something really nice to show your appreciation.

I think a trip of that standard deserves a bit more generosity that some camel milk chocolate...but what? Think the pashminas are a great idea for the ladies. The man is obviously more of a problem. Are they American?

I took a sword in a frame to the uk last august for my cousin's wedding present - they were wrapped in bubble wrap and in my case (that was checked in) had no problems with it at all. I think that as it's ceremonial and in a frame and also checked in the hold it's ok.

Re the daggers etc, you might want to check you can get them through USA customs first. I think those items might be contraband in Australia and they get confiscated by customs???

I like the idea of an Arabian dagger, maybe in Omani silver? Mind you, it might be misunderstood ;) In some cultures, I think you're not supposed to give a knife as a gift?

Thanks Princess but dates are kind of insufficient, some things I will strugle to get through customs and yeah, Burj Khalifa is a bit tasteless. Does not have to be typically Dubaian - just something I can get that is a little bit regional would be ok
