I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS since coming off the pill and my weight has suddenly shot up - my doc has recommended glucophage to help me lose weight and she said it would also aid my conception chances. Whats your experience with glucophage? did you lose weight? get pregnant? Thanks!

Thanks M - thats great news! What was your dosage? Initially I was on 2000mg per day as my levels were through the roof when I was first diagnosed. Over the years, the dosage has come down to 1000mg per day and now that I am pregnant, I have stopped taking it. Metformin based medication helps your body absorb insulin (sugars) from food over a longer period of time. Insulin resistant people have the added problem in that because the body does not absorb insulin from food naturally, the body produces its own insulin when you eat to compensate. Hence you get two doses of insulin when you eat and that explains the weight gain. In effect, because your body is absorbing insulin more effectively, you feel full for longer. As wuffles says, glucophage is not to be taken lightly and should ideally be prescribed by an endocrinologist who specialises in insulin resistance.

out of interest - is it the apetite loss or the affect on the insulin that supports the weight loss?

Can we use glucophage just to loose weight? Cant seem to get the pounds off. desperate :( Google the side effects-don't think I would take it without compelling medical reasons and supervision

Melinda, that was my issue also. Prior to being diagnosed, I was doing body pump twice a week and followed an ok diet. It wasn't until I started putting on weight for no apparent reason that I knew something was wrong. I went from 57kg to 62kg with no obvious reason. Once I commenced on glucophage and followed a low carb diet, I got down to 55kg and was able to maintain this for a long time ... until I came to Dubai! It took me a good four weeks to start noticing a difference in my weight once I started on the glucophage, I am sure you'll start seeing results very soon! good luck : )

Here's my experience: Diagnosed with grave's disease (hyperthyroidism), followed by PCOS and insulin resistance. All linked. Got the thyroid hormones under control, had a cyst removed which was wrapped around my left ovary (ovary salvaged) and have been on glucophage for four years. BUT I followed a strict diet and exercise regime. My doctors advised me that you cannot just rely on the tablets to help you keep your weight off, you need to make some life style changes too - it's better for you in the long term. In my last two glucose fasting intolerance tests, I have recorded normal levels of insulin and was told by the doctors that this is is due to me re-educating my body through exercise and diet. To top things off, I fell pregnant within four months of trying and am now in my third trimester. I think you have to be willing and ready to put in the work to manage your condition if you want a successful outcome. But, it's different for everyone!!

I know a couple of peeps who use glucophage for insulin intolerance. Both have lost weight, one lost 5kgs in a month and the other lost 10kgs in 7 months. Neither likely to get pregnant though.

Glucophage success rate is pretty high as it helps regulate the insulin and curb appetite hence the possible weight loss... my very close frnd is pregnant right now with her baby owing to being on glucophage(she has PCOS too). she did control her carbs and she still is controlling it along with sugar in take.. all the best...

Melinda, I am in an almost idential situation, off the pill about 6 months and diagnosed with PCOS. Docs suspected it before as periods have always been irregular. Weight went up after going off pill and now on hormone meds to stabilise again and this isn't helping weight. I dont have experience with glucophage but expect after next blood tests if my insulin is a concern they may put me on this too. If you want someone to talk to about PCOS etc I am here as its all new to me too. I know glucophage/metformin are used with PCOS sufferers along with progesterone/clomid etc to help you keep weight under control, have regular periods/ovulate etc. I dont think it makes you more fertile however the combination of losing a little weight, taking progesterone to help you have a period if irregular and clomid etc to help you ovulate all increase your chances to those roughly the same as a woman with a regular cycle. About 15-25% of concieving each month if all works I believe. Good luck!
