Hi Ladies

I've been wearing lenses for years now, but have not had my eyes checked in ages. The last time I had a contact lenses check was about 3 years ago(in the UK), and I don't want to just carry on buying lenses without a proper check.

What I would like to know is where can I get a full contact lense check? I have been to the opticians here but they do not check the back of the eye. To be honest when I did try to get my lenses checked here it took all but 15 min (compared to 40 min in the UK) Didn't really trust the optician.

I was thinking moorfields eye hospital, but that a bit of a drive for me. Any recommendations?

So I never went to Lunettes because I had to reschedule but I decided to set up an appointment at Moorfields since it's more strongly recommended. I don't know if Big blue did a typo but the appointment setter told me it was 250 dhs for the eye exam which is more of what I was expecting to pay for an eye exam here than 100 dhs. I can keep an update on whether I like the service for anyone wondering. edited by grace83 on 16/10/2011 Hi grace83, I didn't make a typo error (I wish..)! But going back to my initial post, what you pay for depends on the exam you get, if it's just a vision test with no dilation, eye pressure, retinal scan, etc, then it makes sense they quoted you 250. I still believe we should all be having more than a simple vision test every year or two though, unfortunately I have seen conditions with 3 friends that could have been prevented (most likely, no way to know for sure). Hope your exam went fine!

Moonbeam I'd like to add that I've also been to Moorfields (after years in Europe and the US) and they are very professional, competent and thorough. I believe I paid 750AED a couple of months ago. One thing to bear in mind is that the sunglasses shops that offer vision exams and charge 100-150 do a very basic exam. Which may be fine once in a while, but I like to have a full exam at least every two years to check for other things such as eye pressure, retinal condition, etc. There can be serious conditious (sometimes genetic) that only exhibit side effects when it's a bit late to correct them (for instance retinal detachments) so prevention is very imprortant IMO. Good luck!

Thanks Ladies The thing is I can't wait till I go back to the UK as I have no idea when we will go back again, maybe next year so need to do this ASAP. I have had bad experiences with so called opticains here. Me and my son went to an optician here to get checked and he told me that my son had serious eye problems, I took him to moorefields in the UK when we were there and they came back and said he had perfect vision! I just did not have time to get myself sorted at the same time. This is why I'm asking for your recommendations so at least I'm going to someone reputable. Please post your reviews of whoever you go with..... edited by moonbean on 12/10/2011

I also went to moorefields here, been a few times and the drs do check the backs of your eyes and all, but still not very happy with the optometrists there. I'm also looking to find somewhere else to go.

Please be careful, I recently posted my experience of opticians in Dubai. I had been prescribed +2 contacts when in fact I only needed +1. I only realised that I had been wearing the wrong prescription for the last 2 years when I went for a check up in the UK. The opticians in Dubai also told me that my 3 children needed glasses when their eyesight is perfect. Personally I would go to Moorfields or wait until you go home.

I was going to ask this same question as well with the previous thread about eye exams. I have not been home in 2 years and it looks like I'm not going anytime soon. I don't want to hijack the thread but I've now called Lunetes (from the recommendation) and scheduled an appointment since it's closer to me. They said it was 100 dhs for the contacts eye exam, is that correct...it seems a little low. They also said I can't wear my contacts 8 hours prior (!!!) I'm as blind as a bat so I scheduled in the morning and will have the hubby chauffeur (sp?) me and fill out my forms.

I went to Moorfields eye hospital in Health Care City, they are linked to the UK one, they seemed to be quite thorough and checked everything, about Dhs 500 I think. I also ordered my contacts from www.visiondirect.com in the US, my contacts arrived to my PO BOX within a week, I have been using them for a few years, they are quite cheap and they said if I don't recieve them they will send me a new lot.

To be honest i think your best getting sorted in your home country. I've taken contact lense box I got from back home, said i wanted the exact same, 2 weeks later my eyes were so dry and felt horrid ended up wearing glasses until i went home again - found out they had given me the wrong shape for my eyeball. Don't trust them, always buy a 6 month supply when home now. Also got tested for my glasses, wrong subscription given.

I go to Lunettes on beach road and have done for about 5 years. I find them really good and a couple of years i had an issue with my eye and they referred me to an ophthalmologist. I really do trust them.

I haven't been to her yet but someone recommend Dr Waafa to me as well, that clinic deals with the GCAA medicals for the pilots so I am sure they are thorough. I needed to go to get an eye check for a pre-existing issue (I also wear contacts but am not happy with the ones I was given in Dubai, therefore I will be buying from home form now on) If you do go please let us know how it is there :)

When I had a problem with my eyes some years ago, I went to see Dr Wafaa at Dr Akels clinic in the Magrudy Centre on Beach road. She was very nice and very thorough, I don't know how much she charges though...

I'd also be interested as I have yet to find a place so I have my eyes tested once a year when I go home. 150DHS for a full check that takes half an hour!
