Help - moving to dubai

Hi,

Just found out we are moving to Dubai. We were originally told we were going to Abu Dhabi and had organised school and knew which area we wanted to live in. I'm now back to square one and feel like I'm about to have a nervous breakdown.

If anyone can help I'd be grateful.

I'm looking for a school which offers UK curriculum, which may have space in year 7 & year 8. Ideas on places to live which is walking distance to the school (can drive but don't want to straight away) looking for a community which has a communal pool. Would need to have shop or bus stop nearby. DH will be working in Abu Dhabi until January and then moving to Jebel Ali area, so somewhere with not too long a commute.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi...welcome to Dubai! I'm afraid that you don't get your 500dhs application fee back; make sure that there is no waiting list or that it's a short one. I paid fees over to two schools that my DD had absolutely no chance of getting into becasue of the length of the waiting lists. Someone mentioned the Greens as a nice place to live; I don't live there but it does have a nice feel to it. It seemed quite villagey

You could also live in the Greens, they are apartments though! Lovely for the kids, they all have pools and play areas and are walking distance to shops and Regent International School. It's also not too far from Jebel Ali. Welcome to dxb Nessie! I second what Tillyk says. The Greens is a great place to live. Me, my DH and our two kids have been staying here for almost 2.5 yrs now. Love it. Walking distance to shops, restos, and to our kids' 2nd home, Regent school. So try the Greens. Don't think u can go wrong here in terms of it as a place to live or in terms of schooling at Regent.

Hi We live in Barsha 1 close to Wellington international school and my kids can walk to school. We are also walking distance to arguably the best mall, although there are others almost as good, with metro links. Bear in mind the heat when considering walking - mine cut through the metro station to get some a/c on their way home! As for you school fees allowance - if you go onto the school website, wellington international school (all one word) and look under admissions there is a fee schdule. WIS is about average to upper average for uk curriculum school. You can also check other school website like this. There is a site that lists all the schools and fees - it has been on here before but I can't remember what it is. You could search but you are likely to get lots of threads with people complaining about school fees! http://www.dubaifaqs.com/search-results-google.php?domains=www.dubaifaqs.com%3Bwww.desertspeak.com%3B&q=schools&sitesearch=www.dubaifaqs.com&sa=Google+Search&client=pub-5365398065937063&forid=1&channel=4300082978&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&cof=GALT%3A%230066CC%3BGL%3A1%3BDIV%3A%23999999%3BVLC%3A336633%3BAH%3Acenter%3BBGC%3AFFFFFF%3BLBGC%3AFF9900%3BALC%3A0066CC%3BLC%3A0066CC%3BT%3A000000%3BGFNT%3A666666%3BGIMP%3A666666%3BFORID%3A11&hl=en#1354

Thanks Guys, Lots of great ideas. I have emailed all the schools mentioned plus more. Only one to reply so far is GEMS DSO, I won't rule them out but person replying was quite off putting although she did say spaces were available but until I paid the fee and put application in then wouldn't guarantee the places. Totally different from the school in Abu dhabi - lady there phoned me, discussed the application process and put the places on hold then & there as only one space left in Year 7. If I put in application forms to several schools & pay the registration fee for each - do I get this money back if the children don't go to that school because no spaces available. What if (I know a very BIG what if) they get places in say 3 schools, I presume the reg fee is lost to the schools we don't go to. Next thing is DH draft contract came thru today. So far they are only offering 2500 UAD monthly per child towards school fees - is it just me or is this quite low? Thanks again, you have been a great help. I have a million more questions but I'll trickle them in slowly.

Hi Nessie I too am moving to Dubai (flight's are booked for 29th August). My husband is already out there in a house provided by the company in the Springs. The house is probably too small for us long term tho so we'll be moving when the current contract is up in nov (he took on the house from the previous person doing his job), but I'd like to stay in that area just with something a bit bigger. Anyway we got places for our children at Dubai British School, my eldest is in year 9. I'm not sure on places now but we were told it was easier to get places the higher up the school they are so you might be ok with yrs 7 & 8. I went out to visit in May and was pleased at how close the house was to the school, the pool and to the shops. Like you, I can drive but don't necessarily want to straightaway. Good luck and keep in touch :) edited by LoopyLoo on 26/07/2011

I think that lcoolie's plan is a good one. Arabian Ranches has stood the test of time, with lovely pools. You can walk to the shops from some areas in the cooler months, but your children would need to catch the school bus. You could live at DSO but it would be a further commute for your DH, and his day will be long, as it is in Dubai! Saltire's advice is also sensible or you could stay where you are and try and get school places once term starts, with your DH staying in a serviced apartment.

A bit late to be looking for schools but you may be lucky. On the other hand you may want to consider staying in AD as you have school places there and DH commuting when he eventually works in JA. You could apply for Dubai schools for next year and move if and when places come up. Good luck and welcome. :)

Welcome Nessie - we move over in a couple of weeks to Dubai from the UK - managed to get both of mine into new Gems DSO ( Silican Oasis) school opening in September which is UK cirriculum, mine are aged 4 1/2 & 8years. We chose to live on Arabian Ranches - there is a school bus that will run from DSO to AR. But will wait till mine are all setteld before I add that on the list. We get regular updatres on the school & the rest of Gems school in Dubai have great reputations. We struggled getting into schools with Uk cirriculum, long waiting lists etc..... you can also live near school at Silcon Oasis - its an up & coming area - still in development - has supermarket, shops & rest - but I wanted something a little more set up so we can meet others quick etc.....

Welcome to Dubai, Nessie :) I'm sure you'll be fine - once you've got everything sorted.. Could I suggest you look on the schools board for sage advice about searching for schools at this time of year. I'm afraid I can't help you as we're using the IB system for our daughter, who is older than your children, anyhow. A school which springs (huh, sorry) to mind as being within walking distance of a community with a communal pool is Dubai British School, which is in the Emirates Living (Meadows, Lakes, Springs) area, but I can't tell you much about it, I'm afraid.
