Hello Ladies,

I have just received my blood tests and I have a high Cholesterol level.
Can anyone please recommend a good endocrinologist that I can see?

TIA

You can find dry hibiscus flowers ( as in Egypt) in Carefour spice section. it's called Karkadet. You boil a pan of water, add a handfull of dried flowers. Let it simmer for 5mns, sieve it add sugar to taste ( quite a lot as it is sour) cool it and it makes a very refreshing drink. I have high cholesterol and dieting and exercise made no difference. I had to surrender to statins. I take one a day and get a blood test every 2 month.

Hi I know of a friend who had cholesterol high. He was advised to have two table spoons of curry leave juice everyday. Amazingly his cholesterol level has been reduced.

I too heard of the hibiscus tea - I had a friend bring some from Egypt (it's apparently a very well-known remedy there) but it doesn't work for everyone. Sadly it didn't help me :(

Your GP can give you the diet you need and will monitor your levels more frequently in the beginning of treatment to see how effective the prescribed meds are. I monitor my own blood pressure (hypertension and hyperlipidaemia often go hand-in-hand) and my blood is now checked only once a year. In the beginning it was checked every three months as it takes a while for the meds to be really effective. Sometimes your levels can just be diet controlled (by far the best option!) It really depends on your trigger and lifestyle. Mine is genetic (I'm not overweight at all and eat sensibly) so I had no choice. If your triglicerides are high too then you HAVE to exercise - it's the only real way to get those down. Good luck!

My DH has high blood pressure and high cholesterol and takes medication for both, prescribed by Dr Tariq at Belhoul Speciality Hospital. They check his BP every few months when he goes for a repeat prescription and blood work is done once in a while...as said before, I'm sure any GP could manage your condition, unless there are other factors that we don't know of....the Dr will advise you to cut certain things out of your diet and do exercise of course, but high cholesterol can run in families. A friend of mine here has a husband who does lots of exercise, is not overweight and she cooks healthy meals for him - his cholesterol is sky-high and he has to take medication for it through no fault of his own. edited by chizz on 03/01/2011

a friend told me last week that hibiscus tea has been proven to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure siginificantly within 4 weeks, I have yet to find out how much you need to drink or if other hibiscus products do the same. My mother has high cholesterol and would prefer more 'natural' management - anybody else heard about this hibiscus tea thing?

Oh, I did not know that. And does your GP set a diet for you? exercises, ... How often do you check your levels?

You don't necessarily need an endocrinologist - my GP has been managing my hyperlipidaemia vry well for years.
