How do I know if a cat has a chip (or whatever it is called) and what to do with a stray

A stray cat has turned up at our door, clearly malnourished. she is very friendly and doesn't appear to be a wild cat. I think she is either lost or has been abandoned.

How would I know if she had a chip or tag ?
Are there any vets near The Lakes / Meadows ?
We bought some dry cat food and some cans, but how much should we feed her and how often.
Could she be carrying any dangerous diseases (can't get to the vet for another couple of days)

Thanks

Re the chip, I think most - if not all - vets have those scanner things that read chips. Once you have the number, though, you'll need to call the municipality to see if it's registered with them and if not, start calling round the vets :(. This was my experience when I found a stray dog a while back, anyway. Good on you for giving the poor wee thing a home if she doesn't have one she's missed at :(.

Thanks ladies for the quick responses, I have no clue about this pet/animal stuff. Will try to find her owners and if not, I guess we will adopt her. She's a lucky girl to have landed on your doorstep then! :) One of the lovely girls from Feline Friends once told me that even street cats can be incredibly friendly. Lol...it's almost like they know sweetness will get them in the front door, so to speak. ;) Either way, good on you for helping her, and good luck whichever way it goes.

On the pets section in this website there is a sub heading about what to do if you've lost a cat. Within that is an email address for people to contact to see if their cat has been found. Maybe its worth emailing to say you've found one? It might also be worth giving feline friends and also some of your nearby vets a call to see if anyone has reported a cat missing that fits the description of the one you have found. I'm not very familiar with your part of town, but I'm sure there will be vets round there. Also Al Barsha Vets isn't that far from you and their details are on this website too. With regards to feeding the cat, if it really is malnourished, I'd suggest feeding little and often. You don't want to end up overfeeding and causing him/her to be sick.

If you have a chance, please take her to the vet, they will be able to read the chip number, if she has one and contact the owners.
