How to have a perfectly levelled lawn?

I just had a landscaper returfing my entire front garden for free as we had big problems and misunderstandings the first time. This time , just like last time, the grass is full of bumps and does not look level at all. He claims that you can never get a lawn perfectly flat the first time and that we should bring a truck of sand and put it on top in 2 weeks’ time when the grass has the roots established , etc. From my experience with the old grass , once you have the bumps it will never be levelled even if you throw the entire Sahara desert on top. When I inquired about using a heavy roller, he replied like I was crazy , and said they never use a roller for grass!
This is a professional company (supposedly) but I think he is full of **** and would like some advice whether I will ever manage to get my lawn flat or should I just call someone else to fix the mess today before it’s too late???

Lol Eli...have patience. :) What are you going to do with the enormous, heavy roller once you've done this one-time job with it? ;) Rolling helps the lawn establish, but will not even it out.

Thanks everyone! I think my gardener understood that we wanted to do the top dressing now! He could not bring a heavy roller either as they are doing a project where they need it, so I am now stuck with the uneven ugly grass. I al going to go to satwa and buy a one ( if it's not to expensive ) and do it myself! :\: edited by Eli1979 on 03/11/2011

Now is a very good time to be top dressing, but I would not do it until the roots of the new lawn are established. It needs a half decent root system to be able to grow back up through the 'sweet soil'. Planting a new lawn then plunging it into darkness immediately may be too much for it to come back healthy and strong.

You roll after the grass is laid, so will be OK to roll today. The grass will look uneven still after rolling...really only gets level after the top dressing. No, I wouldn't say your gardener right. Right now is a fine time to do the top dressing (too hot? no way! It's beautiful out). Grass can really be planted and leveled at any time of the year...it's the shrubs/trees/planting you have to be concerned with (but now is the perfect time to plant those now too).

Than you rose0284, He says that he does not use a heavy roller which basically means that he does not have one. The grass looks really really uneven and I hate it :( Do you think it's still ok to use the roller tomorrow as the grass has just been laid today? Do you use the roller before you lay the grass or after? Or maybe both? Edited to add that my gardener says that now it's not a good time(too hot?) to do a top dressing with sand and the grass will be damaged.. is that right? edited by Eli1979 on 02/11/2011

Hi Eli, He is 3/4 of the way right. You will never get a perfectly flat lawn when you first lay the turf. This is because the turf itself isn't level (no matter where you buy it) as the roots and dirt from growing it are thicker and thinner in different places. He is also right in that after about 2 weeks he should come back and put a layer of SWEET SOIL on top. It at this point will look like you have no lawn as the soil covers most of it. After about another 1-2 weeks the grass will come back up through and you then should have a level lawn. He isn't right in saying they shouldn't use a roller. A roller should still be used when the grass is first installed as it compacts the sand underneath and gets it more even than it would have been. I would give him a chance to sort it out as if you get another company in, they will probably do the same thing to rectify. If after he puts the top soil on and the grass comes through, it still isn't level then I would bring in someone else. HTH!
