...why some women wear long skirts, then hitch them up till their thigh with one hand. It looks ridiculous! Better wear a mini skirt, it will leave both your hands free too :/: [Rant]

You got it right! French Connection it is. It was our regular breakfast place before LO came along (shes usually so well-behaved, but gets really hyper and forgets all her manners when we go there, I wonder why...) Its a nice, no-fuss place for breakfast, or a quick, light and healthy meal. I love their croissants. yuuummmmmyyy... free wifi is definitely a plus :D

Don't worry, I wore jeans my first day here too. because I thought it was like Saudi where you couldn't show your legs at all. Well, I knew you could, but I was still too shell-shocked and scared. If FC= French Connection, that place literally was my life line to home with the free wifi! And the eclairs were so good! :P Oh, maybe FC is festival city???

I guess you are right kitty, because its all loose and flowing. Thats why I love my a-size-bigger linen pants :D When I was new here, we walked to FC for breakfast, and I was wearing jeans (stupid me!). On our way back, it was sooo hot, it felt like my thighs were roasting! I peeled them off as soon as I got home. I still shudder when I think about that day. Sally, thats a good idea. lol @ EXpat. If I wasn't so afraid of that 'EX', I would have taken you up on it!

LOL.... it'd be a 'flash-dip' instead of a flash mob.... can just imagine the looks! Not to mention the reaction, haha still, one of those funny things it'd be fun to daydream about doing when people are annoying you!!! :P

Ok ladies I feel a dare Has been given to me ;) lol I have an idea...instead of this weeks Mercato costa coffee morning why don't we all meet at the fountain side and have an EW cool down. You never know we might become a bigger attraction than the gorgeous fountain display. Then we really will be the infamous EXpat Women of Dubai. Although to be honest reading some of the ladies who write on this site...at times I think they could do with a good cooling off lol:)

Black or not the fabric seems to be a lot thinner and friends who wear them tell me it's way cooler than jeans or capri pants... what I eman is, you could wear something short underneath as no one would know... my friend in Saudi wears PJ shorts and singlet under hers

I know what you mean Sally, I feel the same way. The heat is unbearable outdoors. But that doesnt give anyone the right to strip! I mean, if too-shirt shorts and tube tops were the norm, people would find even those too hot and want to walk around stark naked! And TBH, I don't really even have a problem with skimpy clothes. Just this hitching the skirt up and trying too hard to expose peeves me. [rant over'> A dip in the lake would be nice. You should do it sally, i promise I'll join in if I'm around ;)

Ha ha, so if we see a lady taking a dip in the fountains we know where Sally is!! ;) During summer I was very tempted to get an abaya and just wear shorts underneath!!!

No it's true the malls are very cold. It was just tonight I was in and out of the Dubai mall with friends seeing the fountains in fact I had dinner at social house at the fountain side and to be honest with the longdress I was wearing and the heat it took all my strength not to hitch my skirt up and jump in that man made lake with the dancing fountains just to cool off. But agree with your thoughts ladies and will stick to long dresses and eat indoors. P.s I'm not one of the skirt hitchers you have seen but agree it can look odd when hitched up.

True skykitty, it is amazing some people's choices of clothing and I have seem some people dressed very provocatively and it's just a bit of a no-no here in Dubai but with the heat sometimes I wouldn't mind stripping down into my hot pants on occasion but I don't have the confidence and I would not be so disrespectful to the country. Also I wouldn't want the attention lol but I totally agree with an ever increasing amount of short skirts being on the shop racks. The malls are freeeeezziinngg cold! I am not saying I have a problem with people who wear skimpy (to a limit!!!) clothes. But whats the deal with wearing a long dress and then hitching it up? I mean, it looked like she was desperate to show skin! You are right skykitty. I have been going around stores looking for dresses. The ones with decent necklines and sleeves (even sleeveless, just not strapless!) are too short, and the long ones have ridiculously deep necklines, or are strapless! And to top it all off, more expensive then the UK or US.

Sally I would agree in my own country but I find it odd that (some) women seem to dress way skimpier here than they would dare in their own homeland... how does that work?? I mean, for 99% I'm sure there's no problem but it's a sad fact if you have some other issue/trouble you usually WILL be judged by how you are dressed.... several friends have had run-ins with the police and feel that had they been dressed less respectfully it wouldn't have turned out so minor... not saying it's right but it does confuse me a little. Also that so many of the clothes here in the malls are so short!!! :/ I've taken to buying clothes when I travel as I cna't seem to find a lot that I like here that is also affordable

I have seen women doing this a couple of times. Saw one yesterday. She was just walking around the mall. It looks like they are trying to expose or something. And it wasnt a narrow dress, so I know she wasn't having trouble walking in it. And then there's the matter of nearly non-existent shorts :/:

I don't get wearing a long dress that's either completely sheer, or totally strapless on top. I mean, outside of a night out or something. I see girls on the metro all the time in strapless tops/dresses and I know Dubai is tolerant but isn't it considered a bit of a no-no? I noticed even in the ladies only section they were getting lots of looks! I feel a bit weird here if I wear anything short, even if I'd wear it back home. Easier just to blend in, lol I've seengirls doing what you described with long skirts, I think they just don't realise how high up they are holding it. Do you mean when they are riding on the escalator or going up steps? edited by SkyKitty on 08/10/2011
