We have some sort of insect or pest leaving a long trail of sand-like deposits along the skirting and a bit of the walls at the corners of one ground floor room! I can't see any ants or bugs or anything!

Has anyone any idea what it could be and how to get rid of it?

I've brushed it off with a stiff brush but it has started to come back?!

Thanks

Cheeky monkey! Eeeek! That's exactly what it looks like! We live in a rented villa! What should we do? Any idea what the treatment is? Get on to the landlord and get it treated ASAP! Even if he won't do it, paying for it yourself will be worth it. We rented a house (in another country) that we didn't realise had a termite infestation and they got in a load of our boxes in a spare room, they ate some big beautiful coffee table type books that we hadn't unpacked, the paper out of the DVD boxes, and even munched on part of my DH's wedding suit. Oh and the mess they left in the boxes, well, what goes in must come out... disgusting! :(

If you have a dog it may be ticks - there are at least 3 stages. Termites (if I don't own the place) don't worry me. Ticks do. Get a professional in.

Goodness! This is serious! We just discoverred it in an outside maids room that we use as a storeroom! Hopefully they won't have to treat the whole house! We have a toddler and a dog!

Termites are not uncommon here and would need to be treated professionally. They will drill holes into the floor around the skirtings and doorways and inject a chemical into the ground. The house would normally have to be ventilated for a period before you could stay there again (just one night I think). If not treated, the termites will eventually eat through anything organic in your house (wood, cotton, silk, paper etc), so best to get it done asap. I had them in a rented house and once treated they never came back. I found a couple of books that they got hold of which had just turned to dust!.

Hate to tell you but it sounds like you may have termites, eeek! Does it look a bit like this? If so you will need a professional to come and sort them out: http://besthouseinspector.com/photo56.jpg
