I'm all for a parent's right to parent how they see fit...but really, when it comes to these baby pagents, who is protecting the rights of the children?

This "Toddlers & Tiaras" show is so disturbing...like this clip of the 5 year old being waxed and yelling/crying about it. I mean, for what? Money? Vanity? What does the child learn from this lovely life lesson?

So bizarre...

Has any 'research' been done into the long-term affects all of this pageant business has on these tiny children? Surely there are adults now who were part of the pageant circuit as toddlers? It's nothing new is it? I have only ever seen the TV documentaries on this nonsense and I'm well aware that the editors have the final say in the view we see of what actually happens. Documentary sensationalism or not, I just don't understand it. I look at my precious children who need a good 2 hour nap during the day and 10-12 hours at night and I think these women who drag their wee ones all over the country at all hours of the day & night are nothing short of cruel. I don't understand a mother painting chemical laden cr*p all over her child's face. I don't understand a mother subjecting her child to the hours and hours of practice and harassing the child to do something perfectly and teaching her that less than perfect is not good enough. I don't understand the desire to put your CHILD up against other CHILDREN and repeatedly demonstrate to them that being prettier/more talented/less hairy is the be all and end all of what defines that child as successful in this world. I wonder how the poor wee tots fair as adults in the real world?

How can any parent stand by and watch their child be in such distress, and encourage them to go through with it :\: What is wrong with some mothers!?!?!

We had the programme "Painted Babies" in the UK years ago and there was uproar. At that time it was only in the States but these child "porn" shows have arrived in the UK. There is a huge difference between a little girl putting on cute costumes and dancing around for the annual show to parents and those who are waxed, tanned, made to wear "flippers" to hide missing teeth and performing saucy routines to earn stupid trophies and big prizes. I am well aware that many decent Americans abhor these pageants.

When ever i hear Beauty pageant all i think is of that poor little girl, JonBenét Ramsey. Agree with Cheeky Monkey, the parents should be shot! Yes, I am always reminded of that little girl at the mention of these things. Definitely something wrong with any parent who wants to do this to their child and for the people involved in these pageants, too weird for words. Don't people normally get jailed for this kind of thing. :(

Just hearing that other parents feel similarly makes me feel better. I was trying to find a reason why this would be OK to someone, somewhere...I can usually find some cultural, religious, need-based reasoning. But here, I failed to find anything.

Child abuse, plain and simple. it always reminded me of mothers playing with thier dolls...except these are "real" and alive" "dolls"...somewhat a fantasy come true...with consequence.

That video was vile. I hated taking my kids to get their vaccinations because I knew it was going to hurt, but I did at least think I was acting for the good of their health. I do not understand subjecting a child to pain for no reason. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 15/01/2011

I imagine some of them do it to fulfil their own unrequited dreams and ambitions through the medium of their child. I find the whole child beauty pageant thing pretty scary.

That's my point too. I remember when these cute little pageants were on when I was young, and it was much more innocent. A baby sometimes is truly just too cute for words, I get it. And why not win some prize money for it...maybe put the money towards buying him/her clothes/food/schooling/etc. But how you can call it a beauty pageant and it's all about fake tanning, make up to the nines, waxing, suggestive posing and dancing...this is just so wrong. It's different as adults, when these types of things are age-appropriate. Shouldn't these children be judged on how they look as CHILDREN not mini-adults?

Sorry, but the mother should be shot. In my humble opinion this [b'>IS [/b'>child abuse. The child clearly did not want this, nor did she need it. Mind you that whole pageant thing freaks me out a bit! I know most little girls love to dress up in Mummy's shoes and play with her make-up, but to me it's just a bit too extreme with all the tans / make-up and posing in swimsuits for adults to judge them. YUK! As an adult why would you want to look at little girls done up like that, weird?! :\:
