Hi RAS, If you are not having pain when wearing "sensible" shoes, then I suggest you consider the bunion surgery at a later date. I think most of us who wear high heels for a long period of time will get discomfort for one reason or another. But please be aware that having done the surgery may not necessarily give you a completely pain free experience while wearing high heels(of course everyone is different), but being on high heels after surgery (when you are able to, that is) MAY lead to a return of bunion down the road (to some extend), depending on your frequent use of heels and your original "deformity". I am sorry I don't have any doctor recommendations from Dubai. I was too scared to have it done here, so I flew to Singapore to get mine done; both feet! You can check out www.healthboards.com and there is a huge section on bunions with all kinds of scenarios both happy and sad. But you will learn a lot and by the time you really need it, you will be well informed. My biggest advice for you is never do it for aesthetic reasons, the risks can outweigh the benefits. Good luck finding your surgeon, sounds like this Dr. Chris came with sound recommendation. Let me know if you have specific questions about the surgery itself, I am happy to answer them. Good luck! Hi Saharagypsyrose, Thanks for your feedback. I would really appreciate your help in answering the following questions: Did you have both feet done or just one? The pain that you have now - was it similar to the one before the operation or just as severe? Were you able to wear regular fashionable shoes before the operation and after the operation? Did you have or still have any scarring post operation? What was your recovery time in total to be able to get back on your feet, drive and do regular stuff? I cant seem to fit into regular shoes - the bunion rubs agains the shoes and causes pain even if I am wearing the shoes for half an hour. Do you know where I can buy fashionable but comfy heeled shoes (ideally wedges with not a huge arch) sorry lots of questions :( hope u can help me

I have been to Dubai Podiatry Centre on SZR in the past for orthotics - but they seem to treat a whole range of problems, including bunions. Might be worth booking a consultation there first to see if you are going to need surgery? http://www.dubaipodiatry.com/

My DH had a bunion op in December with Dr. Chris Wately at Medcare. He was good (the doc) and the op went very well (had a huge bunion to be removed). DH recovered far better than he (or I) expected. No crutches needed, only had a few groggy days (remember to avoid booze with the painkillers!) then was hobbling about with a fetching black plastic sandel for just a few weeks. Since that has come off he has only a very slight limp and occasionally has the odd pain in his foot if he's on his feet a lot. He hopes to start running (very slowly) again soon,. If you want any more details I'm sure he'd be happy to share, just let me know. hello Jupiter, You are a God Send...thank you so much...It seems like a lot of people are raving on about Dr. Chris and especially now that i know that he has operated on bunions, i feel better.. I would really love to know more in details. Is it possible for me to email you for more details. I dont want to pester you but I have so much to ask and I dont know if your hubby would mind if I had any questions. Thanks a bunch xxx

Thanks Ladies for your help...I have been told that bunion surgery is very complicated and can lead to lots of issues afterwards - so better to not do it unless v painful...this scares me as im young and i dont have much pain but dont want there to be more pain if the surgeon is not good - i know that my bone is growing and i will eventually not be able to wear closed shoes unless i operate...this is the most difficult decision of my life and need the advise and support and hence why i turned to you all. I hope there are a few ladies out there who have had bunion surgeries in dubai as that will be very much relevant to my issue and perhaps I can get their advise on the doctors here. any ladies out there who have had bunion surgery or know of anyone who has and can help me, pls pls msg me..

Dr. George is now at Medcare and I also recommend Dr. Salman Hameed at Dubai Mall medical center.

Honestly I have heard good and bad in fact about every single hospital here. I went and felt very comfortable with the orthopedic staff and even more with Dr. Chris. Yes, there is something I would critizise...he should have insisted I do physio afterwards and not leave it up to me as he said. Other than that - had two surgeries on my ankle there, felt well briefed and informed. Could always call him etc etc. My sister and my football coach both also had surgery there (meniscus tears) and are both happy with the outcome. I also have a friend who did her surgery (yes we are all footballers so falling apart :-) at American Hospital and was also happy. I think you just have to go and see how comfortable you feel. good luck!

Had ankle surgery at Medcare if that helps. Canadian surgeon, Dr. Chris Whately Thanks Drew14 - How did you find the recover process and the dr and nursing staff there? I have heard some horror stories for the hospital there and hence a bit apprehensive to go there..I probably like to go to a few different docs before making the decision.

Hi ladies, I have bunions and the condition seems to be getting worse over time. I cant even wear proper shoes - pain isnt so bad unless, I am wearing heels but being young I dont want to be deprived of wearing nice fashionable shoes or a little heel. Anyone had any operation/treatment with a good, well renowned Orthropedic surgeon here in Dubai - ideally from the West and has good reviews and qualified and certified. Also where can i find shoes/boots with heels that are like wedges without a huge arch? i need a comfortable pair with wide fitting in the front. pls pls help ladies edited by RAS on 08/02/2011
