I second Emma, she is great and it's a great concept which she offers. Initial 2 hours consult and you can have her come back and help you place photos, furniture etc. She is wonderful

A friend of mine recently did a gorgeous loft that featured in the hot 100 homes. It is so beautiful. I can refer you if you like. BTW it is NOT ME. I can barely match my clothes let alone be an interior designer.

Start with thinking of the colours that you like, environment that you are comfortable with, does this include warm colours ( shades with dominant red, orange, brown, yellow, green) or maybe you prefere colder tones like white, blue, turquoise, grey etc etc. Take some time to think of places that you have visited - restaurants, hotel rooms or even somebody's house, think of the colour patterns that defined those spaces? This should give you an idea of what you might be comfortable with. Decorating spaces is achieved in many different ways, it might all start with your favorite cushion, chair, or even a plate that you like the most ? Than you work your way around that design, colour, mood, etc. Try browsing through interior design magazines, it's absolute fun, there is so much available out there, I hope this helps... edited by Dubai squirrel on 06/07/2011 ... she has some great ideas here!

thanks v much. my rooms are all white - light wood furniture and black sofas with beige cushions. Light wood dining table with beige chairs. light wood skirtings - all very bland and boring! All my places have been the same - I tend to keep to neutral colours so i dont go wrong. x black sofas with beige is an easy enough combination to contrast with... my suggestion would be to get wallpaper or paint in olive green... do one feature wall... and get olive green accessories (throws, rugs, candles, vases) etc to make it all blend... this will be an easy yet inexpensive makeover :) on the other blank white walls you could get some stick ons (available in most home stores and dragonmart) in black or olive green to complement... the artsy floral or leafy patterns would work well on the plain walls... all the best and let me know if i can be of any more help :)

Choose a painting or canvas and then pick out a bright colour that is in the painting and use that colour to accessorise the room with cushions, vases throws.

I hate the non-descript magnolia/cream colour of our walls. Have some nice ideas and paint colours picked out, just need to find time/money/energy to do it. What could also work instead of artwork is cover panels in fabric or wall paper and hang those up. Not nearly as much work and it's cheap. You can also take it with you if you move again.

how about getting some really large pieces of artwork? i've just had two giant canvases done by a local designer/photographer and they transformed my lounge. i worked from some images they had and then had bespoke touches added eg my name in arabic.

start with a splash of colour or a dramatic wallpaper... do just one wall and make sure the colour totally contrasts with ur current furniture... once u have this one feature wall everything else will slowly fall in place... for example, if ur furniture is dark brown wood, pick a bright orange or lime green wall... or if ur furniture is white, then pick pillarbox red or magenta pink or hot purple as the wall... hope this helps... would be able to help further if i knew more details of ur current furniture / carpets / etc.
