Hi Irooni - when our helper left last year after having been with us for 8 years we gave her eight months' salary (one for each year). We did this because she was a very good employee, and also because both my husband and I will receive the same from our employers when we leave our respective jobs. Seems fair to extend to helpers the same benefits we enjoy from our employers, at least as far as one is able. Having said that, we didn't give her a yearly bonus (though did give her a pay raise every year), as well as gifts at Christmas and for her birthday. Know of someone else who bought their helper some livestock in their home country which are now a source of income - just a different way to do it, I suppose. Best of luck with your decision!

I was under the impression that it was a months salary for every year of service - regardless of annual increase. No. They do not come under labour law. Only entitled to a month salary at end of contract if they are renewing...so basically leave money.

Yes, there is a law that dictates a set amount. I can't recall for sure how much, check with the agency or check the contract. I think maybe it was 2 weeks per year of service? Just paid ours last spring, my memory is hopeless...

oh irooni, i'm not saying she is, i'm asking "if she is" because i have no idea either. if there is no clause, then i agree with the other posters, do what feels right to you. if she was such a part of your family, and your son loves her, then surely she's worth a little extra? only you would know. sorry she's leaving, from what i gather on this website, good maids are few & far between x

Yes every year. Legally I don't owe her anything. But 5.5 years is a long time to be working in someone's home. My poor baby boy, thinks she is just part of us forver! He was a month old when she came and now he is almost 5.5. I just really want to gve her something that she can save and change her life for the better with. I don't know if its possbile to buy a couple of hundred grams of solid gold with the amount, I am thinking, but that's what I really want to do.

Have you given a yearly bonus as some people would consider that in lieu of a final payment or at least it might alter the amount they are prepared to give..

If your maid of 5.5 of years was leaving, how much would you say is a fair amount for gratuity pay?
