I am a makeup artist living in the uk wanting to move to Dubai. my auntie and uncle already live out there so I have somewhere to stay. I was just wondering if anyone knew what the pay was like for working for the makeup companies like MAC and how popular the freelance industry is? Also what would be required of me to move out there? i.e visa's etc?

Many thanks
xx

After I resigned I decided to look for a job with some better conditions (you know 2 days off in the weekend, possibility to take annual leave, annual ticket, INSURANCE) all the benefits I could not find with Alshaya. Now I have a position within admin/operations and even if I still love the make up this feels so much more stable and secure. Hopefully I could do some freelancing when I'm off, all in all i am happier with my new company :)

Hi there. I used to work for MAC here in Dubai and it is not like in other places around the world. First of all is MAC franchised by Alshaya which is a multi company with over 30.000 employees, which means mass industry. As a westerner it is really hard, the salary is low (7000 aed) 6 days a week and no benefits what so ever.. I would not recommend anyone who is used to working standards from Europe to work in a store in UAE, it is not worth it. Freelancing here is hard since you need to set up a business to do it legally, and there are already thousands of MUAs here. It is possible, but both expensive and complicated, especially if you are new to UAE. Best of luck anyway Thank you for the information, if you don't mind me asking, what do you do now? I currently work for mac in one of the airports but I want to work abroad for a while but try and stay within the makeup industry. Thanks xx

It's fine working as a makeup artist if you are here with a partner that has a main income. I know someone that was successful in the UK here and do get a fair bit of jobs here too, but the income would never be enough for her to even rent a studio in a decent area plus all your regular outgoings.
