Moving during Eid + complete DEWA novice! Help :(

We're due to move into our new place in around 4 or 5 days from now. It's our first time connecting to DEWA as we are new to the country and have no idea what to expect, especially during Eid.

From what I have seen so far it seems simple. Fill in the form online, pay the deposit and it will be connected within 24 hours. (Does a little man just magically appear and connects it from the outside of the property!?).
I havealso read on here that 'first timers' can not do this though! True?

Any ideas on how things will be over this period? Realistically, could it be connected on Thursday? Im not even sure which days will be Eid yet...

Thank you for ANY help or ideas...! And Eid Mubarak!

Call 991 - this is the DEWA emergency number and they should be working 24 hours a day, even over Eid. You will be given a job/reference number when you call and this is the number they will refer to from then on. When the engineers are on their way to you they will call you BUT they never seem to have any credit so if you get a missed call make sure you call them back or you won't hear from them again!!! If nothing happens in the first hour you need to start rehearsing for RADA - tell them you have a young baby and a sick child and pretend to start crying, this works especially well with the men on the phone..................! Good luck!

Should have done that number straightaway as DEWA still not on. Have called them now. Not nitpicking but I am looking at my receipts now - there are 2 - one for 2000 dhs which is the deposit ( refundable) and one for 110 dhs for Reconnection - non refundable. Good idea about the meter.

very accurate post by bbcb - just been there today actually..it is 2000 deposit and 110 for connection... the big office near Wafi at the cinema is very good and they are all very helpful! Gloria Jean's coffee shop there too. Most important thing is get that token first of all and the blue application sheet from that front desk then sit and wait for oyur number to show up on the screens. Fill in that form while you wait. Then off to the cashier, picking up another number - pay and that's it. Question: do oyu get an SMS when it is connected? 2100 for villas 1110 for apartments :) yes you should recieve an sms when its connected - the best thing to do is really dial 991 the minute you leave the DEWA office - if they ask what the emergency is tell them you have children ..

Thank you all SO much! It's by far the biggest worry on our minds right now! Moving everything in on the Thursday with no DEWA connection :( Hopefully it will all go well. I guess to be on the safe side we will go early to the office on Thursday when it opens and hope for the best with the emergency connection. Again, thank you so much for all the information! And once again, Eid Mubarak to all!

If you haven't had a dewa connection in Dubai before you need to visit the DEWA office in my experience trying to get it done online is a disaster - there is one off al wasl road in Jumeriah 2 turn at the Mazaya centre - there is also one in discovery gardens DEWA is closed on a friday - the main office at wafi is open on a saturday morning upto 1.30 pm you will need dewa application form I have a copy on pdf if you need one :) - filled in and signed with the DEWA number on - this is normally on the framework of the front door in apartments and on the electrical pump housing for villas - its a 09 digit numerical number normally starting 394. passport copies of the landlord(or Power of attorney if applicable) a copy of a signed tenancy contract visa copies of the landlord copy of the Title deeds for the property/or sales and purchase agreements passport copies of the tenant visa copies of the tenant( if the visa is in process you will need a signed copy from the office and stamped to say Husbands name .. passport number ...company name ...please be advised that the visa in in process.. stamped and signed by the office ) for a villa the security deposit is 2100AED for apartments is 1110 the process is incredibly simple = you need to go to customer services first get a token from the machine and give them all of the forms - then they will either transfer you to the cashier or you will need to get another token from the machine for cashier and wait to pay once you come out of the office dial 991 - DEWA emergency number and give them your contract number press 2 on the phone to continue in English or 1 for Arabic. they will put in an emergency call to connect - normally within 4 hours - DEWA normally connect within 24hours but its no fun with kids and no electricity and water. if you have to connect pdc - (palm district cooling) this is normally in the landlords name and you get an email notification of the bill.there is a 1000AED deposit per bedroom for PDC. good luck with your move Eid Mubarak ! edited by bbcb on 03/11/2011

I sorted it all our online when we moved in to our place, didn't have to visit an office at all - unfortunately I cannot remember how long the connection took and how it was done because it was over 2 years ago. I was a 'first timer' with DEWA then and it was no problem. It was easy to do, I had to submit scanned documents and pay the deposit and all was done online. One of the easier things I have done in Dubai in fact. I have had absolutely no end of issues with DEWA since then but that's another story :) edited by dibdab on 03/11/2011

you will have to go to there office- not sure where your based but i go to the one behind mazaya centre on sheikh zayed road (al wasl branch)- take your tenancy contract and passport copy with you. it should be switched on the same day- they are open on the 8th november onwards.
