Hi there,

DH and I are looking at going to Switzerland around March. We'd be flying into Zurich and we'll be traveling with our then 17 month DD. At this stage we're planning on staying just 5 nights.
Is there enough to do and see in Zurich alone?
Is there somewhere nicer/more touristy close by to Zurich?
We know it'll be very cold in March, but not wanting it to be snowing, we just want to be able to see the snow on the mountains, IYKWIM. Is March too early in the year for us to be going if we don't want to be snowed on? (probably a dumb question)
I also heard in March there is only about 6hrs of daylight - did I hear this right?
Can you give us any tips/advice on must see/do things in and or close to Zurich?
Is it a place where we'd be best to hire a car to get around and sight see?

So many questions! LOL

Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Thanks for the info! Luzern sounds lovely, so we might base ourselves there... thinking hiring a car is our best option so we have the freedom as with DD it'll be easier. Glad to hear there will be more daylight than 6hrs so we can fit as much into our days as possible!

Zurich / Luzern & surroundings are beautiful to visit. Zurich's old town; picturesque Luzern, from there up to Grindelwald near the Eiger, from there go by train up to the eternal ice/glacier. I love travelling by car, especially as you can stop at your own whim at village inns/hotels where you are served with great dinners & most delicious breakfasts, experience Swiss' famed hospitality at its best. March, being the month of Spring equinox, will certainly have longer than six hours of daylight... Temperatures, who knows in these times of temperamental weather patterns? I would, however, not expect it to be very cold.

Basel (good zoo, lovely old town, river Rhine) and Berne (seat of Government, lovely old town, small zoo, bears no longer on show in the bear-pit, I understand) are both attractive and neither is far from Zurich by car or train. Zug, Luzern, Interlaken are all in the area and I think are much more scenic than Zurich itself. Geneva, which a lot of people like, is only 3 hours away by car or train. Why not take the Glacier Express train which goes through stunning scenery - I've not done it myself, but apparently, it's spectacular: http://www.glacierexpress.ch/EN/Travel_information/Map_route/Pages/default.aspx Enjoy planning it!
