Personally I have never tried fasting during Ramadan but at least during the last five years I didn't have any drinks or cigarettes during Ramadan and I must say it felt very good.

This year I'm trying to eat lightly and drink lots of water, possible cutting coffee away as well. Eating/drinking at the office is not a problem since we have designated areas for that.

Ramadan Kareem to all!!!

I agree, it is extremely shameful how much food goes to waste during Ramadan. But that is the fault of ignorant people who do not truly understand their religion...not Islam :) hey all. Ramadan Kareem. Just to add to the above statement - all that wasted food is shameful during Ramadan. However how much food is wasted at the Friday brunches every week for the other 11 months?? its all a bit Dubai ready LMAO Touche!!!!

I just don`t consider it healthy to starve yourself whole day and binge at night... It definitely isn't healthy. But that's not what is allowed in Islam either. There is a healthy way to fast so please don't be misinformed about fasting in Islam just because you have seen Muslims not doing as they should. *LIKE* A healthy way to fast and a proper way to break fast. It's unfortunate how many Muslims have lost sight of the meaning of fasting. We break fast with a glass of water with dates. This is followed by Koushef (sp?) (dried fruits reconstituted water that becomes apricot juice). I prepare Iftar at home: soup, main, salad. We eat light and nothing goes to waste. Watching the gouging and waste put me off years ago to going out. Hubby will get up and have Suhoor: yogurt, some cheese, I will make foul and he will heat it up. If kept simple, you don't lose sight of the meaning behind it. If you forget the meaning then, IMO, don't bother fasting. edited by Crystil on 31/07/2011

I want to try to fast with my OH this year. We shall see how far I get! Good luck :) Thank you. His own self control is very weak so I have a terrible feeling that he will break all his resolutions unless I try to help him and not entice him!

Exactly, Ramadan should be a time to be frugile with food.... breaking fasts with a glass of milk and a few dates; not more food than you normally eat in a month!!!

You are absolutely right:) Except that the problem is not in being misinformed, but rather in going to dozens of iftars and seeing mountains of food consumed within approx.20 minutes. I know this isn`t the idea, but i`m judging by the Dubai crowd. It`s a country of excess, so there you have it. [b'>Tonnes [/b'>of food in UAE going to waste each day during Ramadan. But that`s a whole different story... I agree, it is extremely shameful how much food goes to waste during Ramadan. I am trying to understand how it could possibly be medically advisable to deprive the body of water for so many hours in such a hot climate, I know of someone who tried fasting and ended up with kidney stones due to lack of water to flush the kidneys out. Can anyone explain what is the health benefit in a total fast? I stopped having religious debates with DH, who was born in to Islam and myself is from atheist background. Simply because at some point you just have to stop questioning and start to believe. You won`t find a rational explanation to a lot of things in ANY religion, It` s a matter of believe...

You read my mind ladies! I tried fasting past two years but lasted for only a week. This year I do not think that complete fasting is any beneficial to health, so going to do detox kinda thing. For the first week though is impossible with overwhelming of all this Arabic sweets, but post this - complete detox - cutting down on cigarettes and trying to eat as clean as possible with some of my yoga routine going on ;) good luck to us all to handle our starving DHs ;-) in last two hours before Iftar -))))

I will usually semi-fast (won`t eat but drink water) during the first few days. Just to show DH that i care. Then just try to be a good girl and cut down on smokes and don`t drink...That will be good enough for me. I just don`t consider it healthy to starve yourself whole day and binge at night...

Whaoo ! Good initiative Mammamia :) Ramadan can be a nice detox time indeed :) I did fast last year for 2 weeks. I wanted to see how it felt. It was ok the first week, but I really wasn't feeling well the second. I still have a huge dilemma between fasting (its meanings) and the health problems that occurs, specially at this time of the year, without even drink water during the day. You inspired me. I will concentrate on eating more consciously, keep myself away from my temptations (for me, it means chocolates and sweets). :) Ramadan Kareem :)
