that makes no sense to me at all Floridagirl. I have a kindle and have hundreds of free books at pixelofink.com I have them on my facebook page and I get daily updates of free releases.
I like the kindle because it is not backlit. It is so much easier on the eyes.
What doesn't make sense?
The majority of free books offered for the Kindle are "bargain books" and not new releases. And Amazon only lets you read books bought from Amazon on the Kindle, where the Nook lets you read anything that's in .pdf or .epub format.(Which US library e-books are.) So if she's from the US and has access to a library card, it would be cheaper in the long run to have a Nook. Other countries might have online libraries as well, but I don't have experience with that.
As far as being backlit, my Nook isn't and is the e-ink just like the Kindle.
What made no sense to me is that you said with the kindle you can only buy from Barnes and Noble. I can read pdf files on the kindle
Have never used the Nook so it's hard to compare, but I love love love my kindle and wouldn't ever want to be without it. One of my favorite features (and maybe Nook has this too - like I said I can't compare) is the ability to download a sample (usually the 1st chapter or 2) - akin to browsing in a physical bookstore.

I like the Nook because it doesn't force you to get all your books from Barnes and Noble. I have a library card from my library in the States and use it to check out free e-books... new releases too! Can't remember when I last paid for a book. So if you are from the States, I'd go with a Nook just for the free books.
