At first I was convinced my son (11 years old) had ADD, as it turns out he has CAPD
http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/ears/central_auditory.html?tracking...
he has had a full cognitive assessment, been diagnosed and we have had recommendations for the next academic year.
I was wondering how other moms are coping, what tools are you implementing to help with the daily routine, are your children on a special diet, do you see a therapist?

Well all the hugs have helped thank you very much, like all mothers I’m looking for reassurance that he will be OK even when I’m not there how ridicules is that right guess all logic flies out the window and we run on pure mummy hormones.

My son has been diagnosed with something similar - but we're still not 100% sure that the specialists in Dubai have it right. I think one of the biggest problems here are the schools. They want kids that are normal and easy to deal with - and my son isn't at school - he's a bit of a challenge. We are constantly being told by the school that if we don't sort out his behaviour we can look for another school for him. A very big stress! He was diagnosed as having ADHD as well, dyspraxia, then processing disorder, etc. the list goes on. I'm not confident with any diagnosis. He has done the interactive metronome listening programme as he has problems with his coordination and listening. I think it helped and we did see improvement, but it hasn't solved all of his problems. Academically he's very bright (he's scored as gifted in maths and English), but behaviour wise he's not easy - and pretty much all the schools in Dubai have a low tolerance for this, because they are not forced by the government to deal with kids who have special needs: whether it's a disability, behaviour problems or even being gifted (a lot of gifted kids have behaviour problems as well). Kids First in Umm Suqeim are pretty good and we've seen them - but it is tricky to find the right diagnosis anywhere in Dubai! Our doctor here suggested that we stop worrying about it and accept that he's a kid who will likely grow out of it... not easy though when you have the school continuously breathing down your neck. :-( I wish you luck and hope you can find the support you need here.

First off, Frances,a huge ((hug)) for you. Im not sure how beneficial this will be, but here is a link to one of the homeschooling forums I read. There is a sub board for special needs, and I know CAPD has been discussed on there a few times. Hopefully, there will be some really useful info there regarding tools families use to help with daily routines etc. C xx http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/index.php

Frances it's a hard thing to take on board but you must rejoice that you have a wonderful healthy son, whom no doubt loves you dearly, sometimes I forget this and go too hard on my DD ... as DR says there are more options available now than there were say 20yrs ago - the world is changing and although there is still not enough 'help' here people are becoming more aware. My prayers go out to you tonight X

Frances, it is very normal to feel upset with such a diagnosis, knowledge is power, so arm yourself with as much information as possible and you will get through it, one day at a time. Children are so resilient but they pick up on vibes so a positive attitude, which I am sure you have, having read your posts over the years, will stand you in excellent stead. All the best!

Frances one of my lot has CAPD, he's also dyslexic. He was diagnosed in a day and age when there really wasnt anything you could do about either so he really just had to get on with things so I cant really be of any help to you. Lately though he has done the 'listening programme' and he said it helped him, it was something that was suggested he try by our youngests sensory integrationist and my lad said it helped a bit. More than that though he tells me on the days he doesnt take his 'eye q' capsules he feels kind of fuzzy so perhaps thats something you'd like to consider with your lad. As for long term prospects. My son is in a very good and responsible profession, granted it took him a bit longer to finish school than it normally would have because you have to pass to get to the next grade here, but he just kept plodding away and once he was at college he got all the help he needed. Even his professional body got in on it and though he couldnt be a pilot like he wanted to - he's done really well for himself and his life is as good as all of his friends. <em>edited by DesertRose1958 on 12/07/2011</em>
