You can get bed bugs from your luggage after flying. Evidently they are rife in airplane holds or baggage areas. The bugs get on your luggage then when you get home you transfer them to your bed when you put your luggage on it to unpack. I never put any luggage on the bed and I also spray the outside of luggage with tea tree oil before flying. We go through a LOT of tea tree oil in our house!

thanks for taking the time to reply ladies, much appreciated. SEY83, that sounds like a helluva lot of work! perhaps tea tree oil is the way to go. i will stay at home tomorrow and get my hands dirty. DS will be at nursery the whole day so if i start early the house should be ready by the time he gets home. i will also check for bed bugs. it sounds awful, where would they come from? thanks again ladies.

I have had pest control in when my DD was about 11 months. We had a cockroach problem and tried pretty much everything under the sun to get rid of them short of pest control but nothing worked. It got to the point where I figured that there was way more risk of my children contracting something from cockroaches crawling about than from pest control. My little one was crawling and I was terrified about her getting a virus or infection from having close contact with the floor all the time. They tell you that you need to evacuate the house for four hours. I would advise much longer than that We stayed out for about 8 hours, and then my DH came home, opened the windows and switched on the AC then we left for another 4 odd hours. Pest control didn't spray the children's bedrooms at all. You have to empty all of your kitchen cupboards where you want them to spray or put gel. You then have to cover everything or put them in bin bags. I then washed everything just to be on the safe side. Its a huge job and feels like moving! They didnt spray anywhere near our clothes as I didn't let them into the bedrooms. The maid and I then had a huge job of cleaning the house, literally scrubbing. Honestly it's the worst thing to have to go through. I would actually advise that you spend a night in a hotel and return the next day. In hindsight we should have done that but didnt think about it at the time. I haven't seen a cockroach since and so I think it was worth the effort. If something is biting your son then you definitely need to do something because it doesn't sound healthy. Have you tried putting him to sleep somewhere else to see if its bed bugs?

I feel the same Daza, that is one of the reasons we don't use pest control at all...my DH refuses to even consider..so we deal in our own way...I also use tea tree oil for mattreses ..and the pif paf method...we make sure that when we spray, to leave the house for couple hours/half a day.. edited by Goose on 12/09/2012

I'm sure that some pesticides are perfectly safe for home use with young children but I've got three little ones in the house and never wanted to risk it. I use tea tree oil for disinfecting if my children get any bites in the house, bugs generally hate it. Their mattresses and bedding gets sprayed with tea tree oil diluted in water then left in bright sunlight for the day every few months.

If they can't or won't tell you what they are using as pesticide/insecticide, they come in with unidentifiable containers or even worse liquids ready to spray in the spray/pump container, they can not provide licence from municipality...I would stay away from those pest control companies or tell them to go away. Whilst living in ranches, we had maintenance guys knock on doors, as they were spraying common areas, they asked if we would like them to spray inside the garden... I asked does he know what is being used...he didn't.Thank you but no . Depending where you guys are from, yon can check lists of approved pesticides/insecticides and active ingredients in your home country, and use that as benchmark...most harming pesticides/insecticides have been long banned in North America and EU...also call or go to Dubai Municipality for approved pesticides and active ingredients. They have their own pest control section. edited by Goose on 12/09/2012

DS (8 months) is being bitten by something. it's not serious but it has to be dealt with. we have cleaned and disinfected as much as possible but we need to make sure that whatever's in the house, is gone for good. can we get a pest control company in? how long should we be out the house for? what do we do with our clothes / kitchen? if they've been in, do we need to clean again or would that defeat the object? DH and I were talking about it this morning and then found this in the newspaper ... http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/health/pesticide-poisoning-cause-of-sharjah-toddler-s-death-1.1072672 ... now i'm not sure what to do! any advice / suggestions? TIA
