I am a photo addict!
In the old days i just used to put my photos into (real) albums as I had them developed.
Then with the invention of digital photography I found myself one day with 1000's of photos over 6 years on 3 different hard drives!
I got them all onto one hard drive
made folders with the year written on it and then went through all the photos and put them in their correct folders.
then I went through and flagged the special ones in each year and made a "good"photo folder for each year.
I then went to Kodakgallery.com and made a photo book for each year...they look fab.
fast forward to 2009 and we switched from P.C to Mac....and moved to Dubai......and don't ask me how but my husband wiped every single photo I had from the last 9 years!!!! I was devastated!!
Then I remembered the kodak photo books......I went to kodakgallery.com and there they were....2000 full res (2MB) photos on their server! from all those years ago!
I paid $60 approx and they mailed me all my memories on 6 cds.....
I took about a week to sort the photos initially....but well worth it...and now I do a photo book each year which means we actually get to look at our photos from time to time and so do visitors if they are interested!

Hi AM - sounds really good. Do u also mean you got a hardcopy photobook or just in digital format?
Ladies,
So glad I saw this thread. Ever since I've arrived in Dubai I have not
managed to sort and go through 1000 of pics of Holidays, DD etc. My excuse
is not having the time! Am making this, one of my new year resolution!

I'm so relieved to know that I'm not the only one disorganised about our digital photos, and that I'm "only" behind by 3 years. I use the Kodak website and have done since 6 years ago, there may well be better sites/applications out there ,but I just stick with what I know works and not feel inclined or had the time to keep trying new ones. I have to get my backside into gear and upload all the year's photos into the website, as I've started a tradition of doing photo calendars for the family as gifts each year...so although it's a pain at the time...it's given me a bit of discipline....but I'm still a few years behind on the print outs...and it just seems to get harder the longer I leave it.
This is one reason I wish I'd never switched to digital photos - we end up with so many photos of an event and I never print any out or delete them. There just too much choice and there's usually something nice about most photos so I never delete any. It was easier when we got back a few photos from the roll of film and that was all you had so straight into the album! I've about 8 years of photos to sort through, it's shameful.
Exactly!!
Dentro, that is my resolution as well! I am also looking for some kind of online storage facility where we can store pics & video clips (& important documents) in case of computer disaster - any recommendations anyone?
shutterfly?
I actually have my photos on 2 harddisks as well :)

I copy all the photos to a new folder - and then delete the ones I know I don't want in that folder. Its much faster to delete than to copy and move. So I delete the ones that I don't want to show, but I know I won't lose them all together.
When u open a folder, see if u can select all the photos in it together and then click open. that way u go go thru each photo and select the good ones.
sorry probably i was not clear.
i need to select the good ones. i have trips with 500 photos, but it would be much more useful to have a set of 50 only, easier to show, share, etc. So i need to delete 9 out of 10. to decide which ones to keep, i need to view them full screen, cannot just delete based on filename or date taken. and then i have to switch window, find the file, move, etc. one by one. If i just simply select a bunch (CTR right click) for sure i will cancel the selection when i had already a lot selected and can start again... just so much hassle, i hoped there is a better easier review method. maybe?
Picasa, which is free from Google, is a lovely piece of photo software; it edits beautifully and scans for facial recognition. I run it on my mac as I find it better than the version of iphoto that I have
See if u can sort them out according to date. Then just drag and sort into folders u want.
I usually have them sorted year>month> occasions each month.
I should open a 2011 folder! :)
If u use a mac, u should have a program called iphoto which sorts according to the dates for u.
Not sure of the other computers, but pretty much most should have some sort of program to store photos.
I highlight all the pictures I want to move and click and drag them into the folder I want. If you right click on the photo you can rename them if that makes it easier for you.
One of my new year resolutions is to sort out millions of digital pictures taken at various trips.... How do you do it effectively? When opening a folder with 400 pictures and try to go though and move the good ones it seems i need to remember the file name, close the image, etc, so much hassle. Let me know your secrets please.
