Good Morning expatwoman. I have decided to get a private tutor for my seven year old to help her improve her english. We are from Jordan. I have contacted some tutor from dubizzle and the fees are too high for some. One lady would like 250 one hour and the other lady want 200. Is this price the same as you pay? That is the going rate for private tutoring. Maybe if its english as in ESOL, you could look at one of the language institutions that may deal with children who run classes after school for small groups. that may be less costly. :) I have a private tutor for my DD aged 8 and I pay 1400 aed per month for 2 hours a day X 5 days a week. I don't know if this is expensive or not. She tutors in all the school subjects but with a focus on English reading and writing. The tutor is not a native English speaker but speaks English fluently. Hi, Can you kindly give me her contact details as I am looking for my 7 year old as well

I clearly remember a post from msrb, saying her daughter does all her homework or any school based work with the tutor. She said she beleives in having quality time with her daughter and would rather someone else does her school work with her (also remember SMonkey objecting to this ). So if you include homework in that time slot as well, then perhaps, it is not overload. (mrsb my apologies if my memory is not serving me right) Yes, you are right, Irooni. I do prefer to spend quality time with my daughter and have found a homework manager for her. The main reason, initially, is that I am not capable to tutoring my daughter in all her subjects - i do have the necessary knowledge or skills, especially when it comes to reading and writing in Urdu and Arabic, so a tutor is the best option for our family. Certainly, it is not the only option.

Anyone know what the fine is for those involved in the illegal employment of private tutors? You do know there's been a crack-down on this here in recent years? Teachers tutoring pupils from the schools which employ them are likely to be worst hit if discovered, I believe. But I could be wrong, and like the illegal employment of part-time maids, it may be something which we're warned about having major repercussions, but in the event, the authorities mostly turn a blind eye to it. ETA: If I were a private tutor in Dubai, I'd be wary of touting for business on these pages. edited by Vdella on 05/09/2013 Well, there is indeed a problem with tutors -- but even institutes! I'd be more worried of getting caught there than working on my own. Let's be real. Those places which offered me AED 60 an hour, making a minimum 200% profit on what they would pay me -- had I accepted -- all stressed the same thing: we cannot provide you with a visa. Then they all added: does your current employer provide you with a visa? What it tells me: those places offer me a job illegally. If I am going to be working illegally (which I will in both cases) do you think I prefer making AED 60 or AED 200 per hour? In which circumstances will I care more about my students? When I feel exploited or not? edited by Loukoum on 05/09/2013 Those institutions can give you a labour card if your current sponsor will give you a NOC to work there. If you have a labour card then it is legal to work there without a visa. I know of 3 BC schools who do allow their teachers to tutor and give NOCs. One school I know of even allows their teachers to tutor on their premises. edited by starsouthern on 05/09/2013 in auh the only teachers allowed to private tutor are the music teachers, as there visa allows, all other teachers are not.

This is a genuine question because I want to understand why some children have so much tutoring. You have mentioned before that your daughter is top of the class so why does she need so much tutoring. Can the school not give her extra homework challenges etc. if she is bright or she could learn additional skills eg music (maybe she does that too). I think I would begin to question what I was paying school fees for or is it a case of keeping her up to par until you can get her into a more satisfactory school. Please don't take offence I'm not criticising merely trying to understand. edited by March on 05/09/2013 I am not offended. I think she is top of her class because she studies very hard. Also, as her instruction is in English and English is her 3rd language, she needs a lot of help in it, especially the academic side, reading and writing. Most of her tuition focuses on her second and third languages.

You are either a tiger mother (in which case, afree with March that maybe some of those hours could be spent on violin - also helpful for getting in to top universities) - or there is something wrong. You child probably gets home from school around 3, then finishes with her tutor around 5, time for dinner until 6 ... when does your child play? Also, you are paying so little for the tutor I would question the quality. Are you sitting with her? Do you know what the teacher is teaching your child?

I don't understand why teachers or their customers take the risk...same as I don't get people who happily employ maids illegally... I suppose if you don't personally know someone who has been caught it's easy to think maybe the authorities DO turn a blind eye - even though the rest of us know they don't....
