Just came from work, didn't find anything in Newspaper. We still don't know when we will have the day off???? Saturday, 26th or Sunday, 27th????

I don't like it...here you never know for sure when there is the public holiday. Makes planning short breaks difficult.... Back home all public holidays are fixed...makes everything easier.

Our school calendar had the 27th marked as a school closure from the start of term. However, yesterday we were informed that all children are now expected to be in school on the 27th unless we are advised otherwise...:\:

this is from the UAE labour Law. I thought this meant that people would be entitled to a day off in lieu if the hol fell on weekend .Or is this just for Public companies and private ones can do as they wish? SECTION 2 LEAVES ARTICLE (74) Each employee is entitled to an official leave with full pay on the following occasions: - 22 - - Hijra New Year. One day - Christian New Year. One day - Eid Al Fitr Two days - Eid Al Adha and Waqfa day Three days - Birthday of the Prophet One day - Ascension Day One day - National Day One day

Kay, to answer your question, if you are in the private sector you are not entitled to a day off in a lieu if a public holiday falls on a day over the weekend. if a company gives it, it's nice to have it, but it is not a requirement of the company and just depends on when it falls.

I used to work for a great private sector company that, when the holidays were declared, honoured the holiday "day" - we didn't get as long as the public companies get but definately the days that were the holiday, we would have off. Now I work for another private company but run by "locals" and it seems that they don't give these holidays. Saturdays are normal working days but with the upcoming Islamic New Year falling on the Saturday, I thought that it would be a holiday for the private sector too, especially as the owners of the company are Islamic, I thought they would want to celebrate their New Year as us Westerner's do. Am I wrong? I'm also concerned about the National Day holiday. There have been rumours that a longer period is going to be declared due to the 40 year celebration but I doubt that my company will give us any time off (Friday is an off day anyway, so the actual National Day will be a day off.) Am I being unreasonable thinking that they should give us a few days or is it something that each company can decide themselves? TIA for any advice or links to announcements for the holidays.

The holiday has been declared on 26th November, but if your company has a policy of giving an extra day off in lieu of the holiday that falls on a weekend then u would get 27th off as well. Go to Yalago.com for great holiday/weekend offers. can you post the link - can't find the announcement. TIA
