The big boy "Baby" was neutered on Thursday and he is doing well :) We will give him a week or 10 days before we let him meet the microchipped cat I found on the street.. I hope they get well together after all!!!!
What a shame, some people leave their pets on the streets and go.. this cat I found is amazing, I dont understand how they can leave her behind :(
JS...she's doing the right thing. The vet will give her the best advice and warn her of any risks. She will make the final decision. All you did was encourage her to be a responsible pet owner. :)
Fingers crossed all goes well.
My friend is taking her cat today for a vet check up and she said that if the vet said the cat is healthy and can do the operation, she will do it for him.
I just hope the cat wakes up after anastesia because if anything happened to him, my friend will blame me for this advice :(
But it is her also who wants to get him a mate, because he is lonely all day at home..
get him neutered. He is not too old :)...better for his health and your friends well being :)
Lol...to be clear, I was questioning the long-term health benefits if he's already 8. :D I've only ever read studies on much younger animals. :)
A fella is never too old to be 'neutered'...as I remind my husband often! lol
I spoke to my friend this evening and explained to her that it will be better to do the operation. I am taking the cat I found to her on Friday to meet with her cat through the boxes.. She said that she is going to consider doing the operation.. She is desperate to get him a company as she spends long hours at work outside the house... I personally believe that he is not going to get along with the new cat if he is not neutered..
We had an un-neutered male cat and when he got older he started marking his territory. Including backing up to my little brother (6 yrs) while he was lying on the floor watching tv and marking him. It was terribly funny at the time, but my brother doesnt like cats now.
Spaying your cat makes good sense. Not only may it help her live longer, but it will prevent unwanted litters of kittens. There is always a risk whenever an animal undergoes anesthesia and surgery. Her veterinarian would be the best one to determine if your cat is healthy and a good surgical candidate.
Also, the male could start spraying now as he will want to mark his terretory (I'm not saying he will for sure, but there is a chance)
If your friend gets him castrated now, then the chances of spraying will be reduced, and it definitly wont smell as strong)
Also as kristina_rmnv mentioned, he may harrass the female which in turn could make her hate him ;)
...
My friend thinks that it is not fare for his age to do the operation for him ...
Now, I don't know if it's too late for this 8yr old cat, but is your friend aware that there are proven health benefits for neutered animals? Aside from the risk of him 'escaping' and adding to the cat population, he may well live a longer, healthier life as a neutered boy. Perhaps she should talk to her vet about it?
The male cat might be bothering the female cat, jump on her, try to be naughty etc..
I have 2 males and 2 females in the house, when the last male got a little bigger he started being naughty with my 2 females, so i had to neuter him!
A friend of mine has an 8 years old male, she adopted him when he was 5 years old and since he was the only cat in the house, she didn’t think about neutering him then. Also he doesn’t mark his territory in the house, and she didnt catch him at anytime doing something with a teddy bear loooool (well my mum’s cat and the Siamese male I had both did this sort of things and they are both neutered males).. anyway.. I found a spayed lost or dumped 3 years old female last Thursday and my friend is now very happy to adopt this cat as she was searching for a spayed female to give a company to her cat since sometime.
Her cat is very calm, he loves to play even at his age, he doesn’t hiss and he is such a sweet little boy.. my question is it possible that he will not try to mate with the female? I understand that he never tried it in his life before.. but since the female cat I found is spayed, how she is supposed to react?
My friend thinks that it is not fare for his age to do the operation for him but I am wondering if they will live peacefully..
The female cat I found is very friendly, and even though my cats spend all day and night hissing at her door, she is not hissing back.
