My son has learning difficulties and I have asked if he can be taken out of Arabic lessons for extra Literacy and Numeracy. The school have refused saying it is to complicated with the KHDA. Does anyone know if it is possible and if so how did they go about it. I would love him to learn Arabic but he is struggling in his first language so spending three hours a week doing something he has no grasp on seems a waste of time.

It might be challenging to remove your son from Arabic lessons due to school regulations and KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) policies, but it’s worth discussing further with the school. Request a meeting with the administration to explain your son’s specific needs and provide any supporting documentation from specialists or teachers. Emphasize that focusing on Literacy and Numeracy aligns with his educational development. If needed, you could also reach out to the KHDA directly for guidance on exemptions or accommodations for students with learning difficulties.

It may be possible to request an exemption, but schools typically follow KHDA regulations. You could explore a meeting with school administrators to discuss alternatives or adjustments based on your son's learning needs.

Can be done, is done for lots of children with special needs or learning issues, not difficult. Suggest you go back to your school and suggest that should they not help in this matter you will be taking it up with KHDA........won't look good with inspections coming up. Just beware though that some schools are now charging parents a HUGE amount for *looking after* their children whilst they are out of Arabic lessons, I know a few mums who have to go into school and look after their child during this period.

I have asked for my son to be exempt and the school have sent me the following Find below the required documents to apply for: Arabic exemption • Passport copy (with residence visa) • No application will be processed without a valid residence visa • A letter from the school addressed to KHDA in a form of a request which clearly indicates: • The student’s year group (grade/Year) • The reason of the request e.g. lived overseas for a long period or previously attended Arabic B classes. • Full details of the medical condition if any. • The parents’ consent on the school request (on the same letter) • A detailed IEP (Individual Education Program) • Last school report card along with Arabic tests papers and sample of the student’s hand writing. • Updated and comprehensive Medical report (dated within the last 2 years) o Contains full examination report, doctor’s recommendations and diagnosis. o A copy of the doctor’s medical license if issued by a private doctor. N.B. In case the child was abroad for a long period – evidence of residency or overseas school reports are required. Only the school can submit the above documents for Arabic exemption approval. Parents are requested to provide the school with relevant documents. Requests for exemption have to follow a specific procedure as follows: • Parent requests exemption through the school – consent form. • Schools supports request by sending letter with parent’s cover letter or endorsement to KHDA or through the school system. • Exemption request is submitted by school with accompanying documents eg. passport and visa copies, birth certificate copy and medical or educational psychologist reports • Case is analyzed according to criteria • Proposal to support exemption (or not) is presented for approval • Parents and school informed.

Schools are so lazy with things to do with KHDA. I wanted to switch curriculum a couple of years ago, all schools made a big hoo ha about it, saying KHDA makes things so difficult, that it basically cannot be done. Speaking to KHDA, they said 'err, no, very straight forward'. Spoke to another school about enrolling my DS, they made a big deal about their Emirati quota, saying they couldn't have too many as KHDA caps numbers and so they would have to count, KHDA report comes out, this school had two or three Emirati's. Summary: many are lazy and won't do what they can't be bothered to. Call KHDA, ask what the school has to do, ask what you have to do, and walk school through the steps.

Topsy, if you are currently seeing a doctor who has run tests on your DS, ask him/her to write a letter. Must be registered practitioner in UAE. Then apply for exemption with KHDA.

Topsy - my DD gave me a letter last week from her school asking for my permission to exempt her from Arabic (first I had heard of it) to take on extra tuition in her own language (she struggles with comprehension) - which I fully agreed and she was ecstatic ( she does not like Arabic as too hard). Keep persevering with the school. edited by Alaingirl on 28/09/2013

I was advised by KHDA that the school needed to make the application for exemption. We had a psyche report advising that it would be beneficial for our dd to be authorised exemption. Do you have any supporting documents from a clinical point?

I wouldn't rely on what the school says. Contact KHDA directly and find out: http://www.khda.gov.ae/en/AboutUs/ContactUs.aspx
