Salwar Kameez?

I need to buy one for a friend's wedding next month. Preferably the material because I need a front open kurta because DD will still be breastfed. Can someone give me suggestions please? I need something slightly heavy and wedding-ish. Also any recommendations for tailors?

Is the Bareeze sale still on? And are they too overpriced?

TIA

KarenBlixen, it's rather unfortunate that you had such an experience (such people are a minority). I'm glad you didn't let a snide comment put you off from wearing the salwar kameez again :)

I have always loved the look of Salwar Kameez (how do you say it in plural?). And I've always wondered...could a western woman wear one without offending the people for whom it is a traditional dress? I mean, outside the boundaries of an Indian celebration like a wedding. For example, an evening out to dinner with friends? Sorry, hope the question hasn't offended anyone, I've just never known anyone I could ask, and this thread seemed the ideal opportunity... Sure, you can wear one :) No one would be offended. Hi there, I got a fantastic, very dressy salwar kameez a few years ago from a store in Mina Bazaar. Can't remember the name but it was on a little side street just off the main stretch. I went shopping with a British-Indian friend of mine who got the same one in a different colour and was able to advise me accordingly. It only cost AED400 including stitiching which was great value considering it was heavily beaded. The first time I wore it was to an opera in DIFC. It was perfect for the occasion - and I had told several of my female Indian colleagues that I would be wearing it. Although they were very enthusiastic before the event, a few of them seemed slightly miffed when they saw me! Not sure why. I turned around to speak to them at one point and found two of them whispering and glaring in my direction. I found this slightly unsettling. To make matters worse, a male Indian colleague in his 50s made a comment clearly aimed at me. Speaking to a mutual female acquaintance (also Indian), he said "You look great. An *Indian* girl in a sari looks lovely." The emphasis really was on the word 'Indian' and he said this loudly so that I would hear. I was hurt by this behaviour and it was the first time in my life that I have experienced racism. But I do realise that most Indian people are not like that. All my other friends and colleagues from South Asia were complimentary, so these were defintely in a minority. In fact a couple of my friends were quite shocked and told me not to take any notice. So - in answer to your question, Buy me a Pony - most ppl would not be of fended, but as in every community in the world, there is a small minority of narrow-minded individuals who may not like it. I wouldn't let that put you off though as there are some fantastic styles and it would be a shame not to take advantage of them. I have worn my salwar several times including to a Pakistani wedding and even to the EW xmas ball - at which I had a full length picture taken by Ahlan (LOL). As the outfit was red it looked v seasonal and stood out next to all the LBDs! Enjoy shopping, stovetop!

A rancher - I have that nursing cover, it's a life saver here and on the plane. It's great because I can peek a boo and see baby, baby can see me, but nobody else sees anything. But your idea is brill, mine is dark brown, could easily get some 'evening wear' covers made hahaha. quote'> Yeah, "evening wear" covers could be a whole new business line. I can see the little black cover becoming a bit hit :-)

Actually, I was just intrigued about the technique discussed here. I'm usually pretty clumsy, but somehow manage with a nursing cover :) (when DD is generous enough to not show her squirming skills). :\:

I saw someone breastfeeding recently and she had a kind of a shawl with a necktie which she put over her head and it covered upper part of her body and the baby - it was very loose so comfortable for the baby. If you are getting soemthing tailored, you could purchase an extra piece of fabric and have one made to match our outfit. It looked a bit like this http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=537374

LOL Thanks Homeward Bound. Better get the name right, first, eh? N.Kaye: Do you have a picture of the Cheryl Cole one? I'd love to see it. The more Shalmar Kemeez I look at, the more I love them! I'm doomed! As someone who likes textiles, the materials and workmanship just seem so exquisite!

80???? Really??? The lady in emirate hills charged like 500. Right, I'm going to them then tomorrow!! I want the long maxi dress type one similar to something Cheryl Cole wore so I'm probably looking at 150 to 200 either way much cheaper. Thank you. Just a suggestion, if you ['>mail[/url'> the owner with a picture attachment of the style of dress you want replicated, she is generally very quick to get back to you with a price quote.

If you're looking at a range of AED 150 and above for material. Check out Srour in Satwa. They have a good selection of predesigned shalwar kameez sets, i.e. formal silk or laces with embellishment on neck, sleeves and in the latest anarkali and flared cuts. Do ask them for a discount because their prices are VERY flexible. And if the owner's daughter is on the cash counter, befriend her for hefty discounts! For a tailor, I've recommended them before on EW and I'm not soliciting but I really love the work of [url=https://www.facebook.com/pages/ABs-Stitch/411182766616'>A.B's Stitch[/url'> These guys will charge you about AED 80 for a simple but beautifully tailored shalwar kameez. May charge extra for more elaborate designs. Also, for breastfeeding, my cousin always used to wear these peasant neck kameezes so that she could pull down the neck and use the dupatta as a breastfeeding cover and easily feed the baby. BMaP your post made me smile. By all means wear the Shalwar Kameez (its SHalwar) and the version that is commonly seen around is typically Pakistani. The style and cut of the Indian version is quite different. Will be happy to answer any more SK queries you may have....it does look very elegant and smart :) I have always loved the look of Salwar Kameez (how do you say it in plural?). Thanks girls. Will take a look at the stores everyone mentioned. Lets hope I find something nice. I can't picture the kurta lifting BF tactic though. Wouldn't the kurta have to be stitched really loose then?

Bur Dubai market is real xpensive, but no doubt they have variety too.. I would suggest Sharjah market, the famous street ROLLA...ud find every type there, and its prices r betr then Bur Dubai market. I myself sell paki stitched clothes, not bridal, just the formal collection, as eid is near!

For material, check out Regal, Rivoli and Ratti (all in Bur Dubai). I think Regal (or Rivoli) is on sale now. Also, have a look at some of stores behind the main street (in the [i'>[/i'> gulleys[i'>[/i'> - prices are usually a lot less there compared to the main road shops. Can't help with tailors - I've tried a few and they're all the same - always need multiple alterations! For ready made dresses, check out Princess, Tia, and there are quite a few new stores in Bur Dubai.

just to point out.. its easier to lift the kurta up to breastfeed rather than have a front open one and have your entire upper breast area in public view :) And best place for salwar khameez is Bur Dubai... There is Princess, Sheetal, Soul of SHeetal, Jashn, etc etc. Take a drive around and u should see loads of stores. And you can also ask them if they stitch or else they will recommend someone. Not from Dubai- but, just to agree with Shaf on the nursing the infant bit- as a) upper body is on view in a front open, b) the expensive suit will lie unused after the occasion( once you stop nursing your child) c) the work on the suit is usually on the front bit- and it will poke the infant while you nurse her.. I like the material in Regal and for tailoring it Yoginiz used to be good..

Hi..how much did you want to spend roughly?? Asking because there is a boutique here and the lady makes what you want chosen from a selection of pics. They are priced between 500 and 1000dh. Post your email if you like BUT I must warn you and say that my order arrives in 2 weeks so this isn't a recommendation (yet). For material - sorry not much help other than I've seen lots of material shops in and around meena bazaar. Hth Sorry forgot to say lady is based in Emirate Hills, her villa is her 'shop' edited by N.Kaye on 07/07/2011
