Exactly what I meant Most parents don’t have a clue what the children are studying as the books never go home hence impossible to compare notes.

I think if parents 'don't have a clue' its because they don't get to see all the work the children are doing as a lot of the time it doesn't get sent home( with the lower grades) and you only see their work at parents evening. I know the spellings, reading, phonics and maths my two are doing if that's any help. They go to Star in Mirdif and are in FS2 and Year 2.

I've been in Dubai for a few years now and what i've learnt is that there is no perfect school, and the school that's right for my child may not be right for yours. I would suggest that you go and do a tour of the schools you are interested in. Ask to see some of the workbooks for the years you are interested in, that will give you an idea of what they are covering right now. @ Buy Me a Pony, I am Australian and my kids basically redid 6 months of the school year when we moved here, however they were not bored because the course material is a bit different. I would be very hesitant to let any school bump your child up after having done just a few months of a grade. Be very sure your kids can handle it. Experts all agree, the older a child is the better they do it school, so don't let the age thing bother you. In most schools you will see a 2 year age spread across a year group. I have worked in schools here for a number of years, if you want more info leave your email address and I will email you.

As every school (and every child) is different, you should probably ask the schools you are interested in to provide you with requirements, skills, subject covered, etc. per grade / age of your child. Why are all school different over here? dont they all teach the English Curric ? If they are so different surely some are better than others. This is what Im trying to work out.

I cannot think that is a reason to choose a school. Its a good enough reason for me. I enrolled my kids in a school based on what the heads and teachers told me, as it turns out its not at all what they promised. People on here say how their kids go to these good schools JESS/Kings/JAPS/star and wellington I wanted to hear from these mums before I sent my applications in so I would have a better idea of what school would suit them academically.

I can understand your concerns now bmap... I find this system of just going by their age and not their level very frustrating!

[b'>Chick Chick[/b'> it may not be a reason to choose a school but it is helpful information to know when trying to work out what grades your children should enter in a new school. [b'>MagicBeanza[/b'> they have to be turning 5 by 30 June in the year they start school. To give you 2 examples: a. DS1's birthday is in March. He started prep at age 4 & turned 5 within 2 months b. DS2's birthday is in July. He missed starting prep last year by 2 weeks so he starts today at age 5 and probably the oldest in his year group. [b'> Kym67[/b'>: LOL I've just sent you an email and you have probably answered one of my issues here already. The dilemma is that I'm speaking to a BC school in Dubai and they are suggesting starting my preppy in G1 in April, then moving him into G2 in September! He's not even reading yet - I really don't think he would be ready for G2 by September. Same deal for my DS1 who has just gone into G4 here today. Unless I have got my wires crossed, they are suggesting putting him into G4 in Term 3 then into G5 this September. I need to write them an email about it, I think. I think I would rather my kids feel confident and maybe repeat a little of their work than have them in over their heads and failing then rejecting the whole move and school because of it. Kym, have your LO's transitioned back into appropriate grades here in Australia? Have they had to move back a grade at all? I'd really like mine to stay with their current peer groups when they return... Apologies, I seemed to have hijacked this thread *blush*. This thread is so valuable. It is helping us get a picture of the skills sets reached in each grade.

Don't panic too much bmap, my youngest went from 4 year old kindy in Australia (she turned 5 in the July) and started Year 1 in Dubai in the September and she was fine. The British curriculum is pretty similar to Australian level in the same year group, though with IB it seems a little different, Grade 4 in the IB curriculum would be equivalent to Year 5 in the British and Australian curriculums.

Am reading this thread with interest. My kids are just starting prep (presumably equivalent to reception) and Grade 4 in Australia. I have an awful feeling, from reading the details below, that the Brisish curriculm is a fair way ahead of the Australian for the same grades. This, coupled with the differing school years, is going to make things pretty hairy trying to place them in the correct grade in a BC school in Dubai. Thank you for this thread. It not really what I wanted to hear, but at least it is giving me the landscape of what we are heading into... How old is your LO in going into prep? Is that 4 turning 5?

DS is in year 3 and his last few homework assignments were writing a newspaper report, a diary piece, short stories. He is reading band 18 (Collings Big Cat). DD is in year 1, is reading band 4 and writing recipe and treasure hunt instructions.

My children attend school in the Uk but just to give you a guide my year 3 has been studying The firework makers Daughter by Phillip Pullman in English Literature class. In English they have been doing comprehensions on World War 2 they had D Day yesterday for example. Maths – they have 10 min mental math test every morning and speed times tables. They’ve covered long division and multiplication this term and are now doing area and perimeter. Year 5, English Lit, They are studying War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. In English they have been writing their own plays which are to be performed to the school before half term. Maths, they have covered multiplying/dividing fractions, decimals and percentages and now they are learning algebra. HTH edited by tally-ho on 24/01/2011

My daughter is in reception, I've got no idea what they have done with regards to maths, her reading and writing are coming on leaps and bounds, she is onto her third book in Book Band 2. She can write little sentances although her spelling isn't fantastic. We are working on the spelling of some words.

I just want a rough guide as to what other schools are covering in English Curriculum schools. I dont want to move my kids to a school that are going to be covering what they have already done.

I canno see how that will help you. It depends what they did last term or what they are planning for summer term. I don't think you should base everything on this. Which schools are you interested in? which school are you coming from?

I want to move my little ones out of their school. Im just wondering what other schools have covered this term in maths and english as it will help me with my decision. Can I be nosey and ask what your kids have covered in these subjects and what year and school theyre at.
