My DD - 14 was diagnosed with scoliosis 6 mths ago - she was a borderline case then as the curvature was 20% - she has 2 curves one to right and one to left. The doctor prescribed some physio and a review in 6 months. After doing the physio I was hopeful of some improvement but we have just had the review and the curvature has worsened to 27% and 25% and he recommends that she now wear a brace 12hrs a day.
I would be interested to hear from anyone that has a child that has to wear a brace - is it quite noticeable, is it comfortable? The doctor said she should not take part in PE at school but the NHS website says its okay to do sport. Are there different manufacturers of the brace - have read there is a new flexible brace - I don't know if this might be suited to my daughter but would be interested in anyones experiences. She doesn't have any pain and to look at her the scoliosis isn't obvious at all. I believe the brace just stops the situation deteriorating further - we will continue with the physio but will this improve the curvature - so far it hasn't. Any advice appreciated. TIA

Best place in UK for spinal is National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. They have private consulting rooms as well and a private surgical ward. However I would avoid surgery if possible especially if a child is still growing, but if you're going to have spinal surgery then best it be at a world leading neuro hospital. If you decide to look for a second opinion this is probably the leading place presuming (from your comment about NHS website) you are originally from UK. Edited to add: A number of consultants have worked at both Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square, some still do work at both now. https://www.uclh.nhs.uk/OurServices/Consultants/Pages/MrAdrianCasey.aspx https://www.uclh.nhs.uk/OurServices/Consultants/Pages/MrJamesAllibone.aspx edited by RuthM on 13/07/2014

Hi Blessing, i'm so pleased to hear the surgery went well. My daughter is under review by a UK consultant for her curvature which is 37% at 15 years. Interestingly the consultant didn't believe a back brace would provide any lasting solution, perhaps because of the type of curvature she has. So we play a watching game, wanting her to grow as she is very small, but not wanting the curvature to increase. But I am delighted your daughter is nice and straight now. Thank God.

Hi. everyone. After more than one year research My daughter recently had scoliosis surgery done in Nurospinal hospital Dubai. Dr Walid Othman is great with kind heart . He has over 30 years experience in the spinal surgery . My daughter now is in recovery. And the curvature from 68 almost 100% straight. We are so so happy with the hospital and the nurse there. And our insurance covered all the cost too. If anyone need help can contact me. I will happy to give opinion .

Hi Desert-Mum My daughter was diagnosed with Scoliosis last October, she was 8 years old then, her curve was already 33 degrees. School nurse noticed, we hadn't. We see Dr Marc Sinclair at The Children's Medical Centre. He recommended bracing, we had a brace made, had a few issues with it at first, however we have just have had the six month check up and curve is still 33 (top curve). This is good news (so far) as being our daughter is so young, the chances of the curve getting worse are very high. In fact her bottom curved has now got better and straightened quite a bit. Our daughter has been amazing with regards to wearing the brace, she wears it 23 hours a day, so sleeps in it, only takes off for sport, swimming. Let me know if you would like to chat more and please ask any other questions. HTH

My nephew went to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, North London and has been under the care of Mr Lehovsky there . www.rnoh.nhs.uk They do have a private and overseas patient unit. You need to look under the adolescent and child section. Copied from the website: RNOH Spinal Deformity Criteria The Spinal Deformity unit at RNOH is the one of the largest in Europe. The unit has a world-renowned reputation for its pioneering work and referrals are received from across the UK and internationally. The RNOH is the pre-eminent scoliosis centre in the UK and in order to maintain and develop the service, referrals need to meet the following acceptance criteria. 1. The patient has been previously been assessed by an orthopaedic consultant in either secondary or tertiary care. 2. Clinical or Radiological diagnosis of scoliosis has been confirmed. 3. Imaging (MRI and X-Ray) has been undertaken in the last 6 months. 4. GP referrals will be triaged on the above criteria. If these criteria have not been met then acceptance of the referral will be at the discretion of the consultant. edited by plum2 on 28/05/2014

Hi, I had scoliosis with a 20% curve, due to a difference in length in my legs, and physio didnt do much for me. I regulary now see Dr Jose at Manchester Clinic and she has been fantastic, more like life changing. She uses the DORN method and through massage and manipulation over time she was able to straighten out my back. To the point where, during and after pregnancy I was worried my curve would come back, but I followed the exercises she gave me and it didnt! She is also a lovely person and great at explaining everything thoroughly. I highly recommend you take your daughter to her, before going down the route of a back brace. Clinic number is 04 349 7008. edited by sourskittleashnut on 28/05/2014 Thanks so much for the recommendation - will make an appt and get her opinion. It seems that Dr Jose is no longer with the Manchester Clinic - they gave me her mobile number so am trying to get in touch with her

Thanks Plum2 & LadyBee We will be back in the UK in the summer for a few weeks - I hadn't thought of taking her to a UK doctor but this is a really interesting idea. We will be staying in Plymouth but there is a good train service into London - did your nephew see a doc in London by any chance - if so perhaps you would post details. Yes, I did sort out the school bag 6 months ago - she has always had a backpack but had a tendancy to just sling it over 1 shoulder. We bought her a smaller backpack forcing her to make use of her school locker and she is now carrying correctly - at least when I see her anyway. The bag is often still really heavy though which surely can not be good - maybe we need to look at this again.

Sorry if I'm asking the obvious, but I assume that you've sorted out how she carries her books to and from school? That she's not favouring one side ie carrying a bag almost exclusively on one shoulder (rather than using a backpack where the weight is distributed evenly)? Exercise and physio can do wonders -- I had physio for my back when I had signs of scoliosis as a child -- but the lifestyle changes helped equally as much at the time (or so I am told some decades on!). Also, yes: totally agree that she should keep up with her sport, within reason. The physio should be able to give good advice as to what is beyond her capabilities. Good luck.

Hi My nephew had a brace for scoliosis in the UK. He wore it over a t-shirt and then wore clothes over the top. It might be pretty hot here. I'm not sure how it would be for girls with breasts but they custom make them to fit, and make new ones regularly, so I guess it shouldn't be a problem. He coped very well with his. Are you going anywhere overseas in the summer where you could access a second opinion with a more specialist centre? I just don't think they see enough cases here to develop the ideal level of expertise.

Health Bay Clinic in Mirdiff - Dr Gordon Bland He did physio in Healthcare City near Wafi, but I will have to check the name. Had a check up last month, and not scheduled for another one until November. His curvature isn't noticeable either, but obviously some will be worse than others, even when both are classed as border line. DS reckons exercise helped - but he's not a doctor :)

My DS was also diagnosed before Xmas with borderline scoliosis. He was encouraged to continue with his exercise (various gym workouts included), and do physio. Luckily it is not getting any worse. Maybe go and get a second opinion if you can?
