We are leaving for Dubai next week and have been told we should set up a vpn to watch tv programs, but I have NO idea how to go about doing that, and for the life of me, can't find the thread I once found about it here. My questions -
a) do we need a vpn?
b) if so, why?
c) is it worth setting up Magic Jack?
d) HOW do you go about setting up a vpn?

TIA :)

Just make sure you have Skype on your computer before you arrive here. You can not access the Skype website from here. The other things you ask about are easy to access without having to use any undesirable programs. edited by jowori on 16/08/2012

These are only really required if you want to watch or view things online that would otherwise be blocked by the local service providers. Plenty of online software you can download, or these days there are hardware options of wireless routers instead.

Hi, Verdeque, and welcome to Dubai! For making video contact, it seems to be best if you download and install Skype to your computer and/or mobile phone before you come here. For watching television, there are quite a few sites where you can download programmes free very shortly after they have been broadcast, without needing a vee pea enn to watch them - and also, there's You tube, of course. Google things like watch TV free on line links and you should find some useful sites. If you feel you won't be able to do without a vee pea enn, google for the abbreviation and add the words shield and expat, not necessarily in that order. Hope that's cryptic enough to avoid trouble.

Take care discussing vee pee enn's on here, they are not really allowed and sites will get blocked as soon as they are identified. As for your magicjack - maybe they work here but I have never heard anyone talking about them. Most of us rely on Skype for calling home, and Skype to Skype is allowed.
