I've been a smoker for 30 years and have finally decided to give up.

I have now been 'smoke free' for 2 weeks.

Has anyone else out there given up? When does it get easier?

Aaarrgghhhh i wanna a fag!

Fantastic Doodles, well done! I hope you took Moustique's advice and used the money you've saved to treat yourself to something really nice! Keep going - you've already proved you can do it!!

Hey Doodle, I've been smoke free for 7 weeks now and it does get easier once you've passed the first 2 to 3 weeks I found. Then it gets easier with every single day. Of course I still sometimes think about smoking but ever so rarely now and ultimately even when i do (think about it that is) it's not an urge any more ... just a fleeting thought, and gone in a matter of seconds. I smoked on and off for 20 yrs (always stopped when i got pregnant as thankfully it made me sick as a dog, so those time where very easy to quit) and then last year I got so fed up and disgusted by it that I realised I truly wanted to quit this time. It took me months to finally be READY to smoke my last cigarette, on the 31st of July. I put my husband through h*ll the first couple of weeks and bless his heart for his patience, i was unbearable and told him every time I wanted to smoke and got all the support I could have hoped for. That was to me crucial, I didn't feel I was doing this terribly hard thing on my own. I didn't use any patches or gums either as I wanted to be rid of it once and for all. Finally I have children and for every craving I got, there was a little voice in my head telling me I wanted to be around when they are old and meet my grandchildren. Now i can go out with smokers and I dont mind it one bit; I even accompany my colleagues on their fag breaks at school - so as to not miss out on the latest gossip LOL. I also gave myself a little goal, at the 4 months mark, i'll have saved (at least) 976aed, so that'll be a be a new pair of shoes, or a bag, or a dress ... any treat I chose :-) Hang in there and take it one day at a time.

Congrats Doodles! I smoked for 10 years and started when I started high school. I 'quit' 7 or 8 time, but finally, in the summer, 10 years later I quit. Now it's 20 years since I quit. If you ask me how I finally quit, I have no idea.

Keep us posted on how you are doing. I have smoked for OVER 30 years. Stopped for one and a half years when I was pregnant and thought i could do party smoking, but sadly that sent me right back into full time smoking again. Please keep up the good work and maybe it can help us other sad smokers to stop as well.

Well Done !!!! A really good motivator is to go online ( any of the quitting smoking sites ) and read the stats on how the lungs start to "repair" themselves, even after 1 day. Read an article recently and it broke down the timeline, quite amazing ,they also had an indicator of the extended lifespan and heart/stroke risk reduction. Hang in there girl. I know with my DH (quit 35 yrs ago) his first few weeks were h3ll for ALL.... but it did get easier and after 3 months he found it a lot easier. He was a heavy smoker and till this day he still dreams about it.After a really good meal he will still say this is when a smoke would go down well. Like many things that are add1ctive I think given the right circumstance you could go back to it really easily. I know DH will always have to have his guard up. Sending very positive thoughts your way, you can do it.;) All the best. edited by Nomad on 20/09/2011

congratulations!!!! Now, stop saying Ï want a fag! get that thought out of your mind and breath through it. It will pass quickly...lots of water, stay away from alcohol and smokers. Wash everything you wear if you havent already. Do you notice how smelly people are that smoke? you dont stink any more :)...as time goes on you will find the smoke smell of people really gets to you....when you want a smoke, jump up and down for 1 minute lol.....anything to get the thought out of your head....you can do it...go for it...dont stop, dont let the nicotine take over your life again!!!!

WELL DONE! It is the worst addiction. Take a lot of deep breaths and be proud! Reward yourself, and get a little exercise. If you slip up, start again and never never stop trying. It will get easier any minute now!

i recently stopped for 2 months and 9 days and then smoked again - and have since been smoking again; am currently on my last pack of fags and tomorrow inshallah will stop again. I have heard that after the first year it's ok. I have been smoking 24 years (god that ages you doesn't it) Good luck. After the pain of not smoking for over 2 months why did you go back to it after coming so far? I'm interested to know so i can look out for the warning signs and try not to do that. I really want to stop BUT i really want to have a cigarette too. It feels like I've lost my mate (sad I know!).
