Am thinking of bringing my grandmother over for a visit, but she's pretty old so there's always a possibility of her dying... just wanted to know what would happen IF she did pass away here if anyone knows

Oh gosh, I guess the question the OP asked caused a bit of reaction - I posted, and then went out only to come back and see the next post was not written in the vein I expected. My husband and I are very practical people and just like to know exactly what to do in a situation. My mother is a relatively healthy 85year old and always has travel insurance in place beofre visiting us, however you never know the minute.............. We have also discussed what would happen if one of us dies too. The link put on by one of the posters was very helpful, thank you. That was the kind of advice I was searching for and will store it away for future reference. edited by jillp on 16/02/2011 edited by jillp on 16/02/2011 Yep Jillp, I was coming on here for practical advice as well to be fully informed, I guess being on a public forum you take the good with the bad though :) The link is great and gives a clear idea, so again thanks SM!!

Not sure if it is an option in the UK, but my mother from Australia has private health insurance through Medibank Private. When she is overseas ie. visiting us or her sisters in the UK (which is as often as she can be!) she gets her policy endorsed with a 'Travel Insurance' policy (probably wrong wording?)... it is cheaper that getting travel insurance from anyone else and the policy doc seems comprehensive for medical expenses, repatriation etc. and takes into account pre-existing conditions. I imagine BUPA or another UK private health insurer would have similar>? But I guess private health insurance doesn't seem as usual in the UK so it may not be an option?

A close friend of mine went through this recently, it was a complete nightmare, the elderly relative ended up in Rashid for a long time as unable to fly home,(you can not always fly back even with medivac) the insurance company became difficult and the relative died here. Leaving the family in the UK devastated and an expensive mess for the family here. If you really think someone is likely to die whilst here why bring them out in the first place? I made no assumptions about how much you visit your dear old gran, just suggested that you visit her rather than bringing someone over here who you are even considering may die whilst visiting! Let alone all the visa issues that had to be dealt with! edited by Sticky Wicket on 16/02/2011

Try Age Concern UK for insurance - they have some very good policies for older people (obviously!)

We got our mum's travel insurance from the post office. It is quite expensive. My mother suffers from everything under the sun and so carries alot of medication with her. Before she came out here we got a letter from the doctor saying what medication was etc just in case she was stopped at the airport with a vanity case full of pills. Just make sure the travel insurance she gets covers her for death abroad.

More importantly what happens if she needs medical care and can not be returned back to her home country, what you are suggesting is selfish and of no benefit to her what so ever. Take the time to go and visit her. Wow sticky Wicket, that is a very rude comment, how do you know whether or not I visit my grandmother and how often, or as to why I am enquiring about a visit here??? what I'm suggesting is not selfish and I think you should refrain from making such rude comments without knowing all the facts...

You have to purchase health insurance and the best you can get, it is very expensive but they take care of the cost of shipping the person back to the country of origin in the event that something terrible happens. Just because people are old, does not mean they will die just because they travvel somewhere. My nan of 87 has been all over the place and she has been poorly for many years and nothing will stop her. If she would like to come out here and visit then I think she should.

She needs travel insurance, and a good one. It is not easy to find for older people. With travel insurance, if she dies her body would be repatriated to her home country.
