My user name says it all well actually it doesn't... I was born in Switzerland but my father is Belgian and my mum is half Swiss half Italian. I lived in the UK for 10 years met my British DH (with a quarter Irish) whilst travelling in Jordan and we went to live in Switzerland where my DS was born (so that makes him what? too complicated to work out the percentage so I guess European ;) ). We've been in Dubai 10 months.

I get asked all the time, "where are you from?", because my accent is so mixed and I don't have a typical South African accent!

Born in Colorado, USA (half Cherokee Native American and half Slovenian) Have a house in Oklahoma, but I've lived all over the USA, esp Calif (I love BOTH Southern and Northern Cali, Guinness! :D) SO is Tunisian, living in Montreal while he finishes his Masters degree. I've been in Dubai almost a year, and I love it here. The story of how your parents met must be a good one! Guinness: My grandparents met on the boat from Slovenia to America, so my dad was born in Leadville, Colorado. My mom was also born in Leadville, and so were my brother and I. So in Leadville (a very small town perched on top of the Rocky Mountains) was a very large Slovenian community, imported to work at a large mine. I grew up with polkas and povitiza. I loved to hear my grandparents talk, with their lilting accents. Sadly, they didn't teach my brother and I Slovenian. They were more interested in making sure we spoke proper English. On the other side, my brother and I went to powwows and were taught traditional herbal remedies by our Cherokee grandmother. I am the first person in our family to leave the USA since my Grandparents immigrated. They are all quite alarmed that I am here, and it has been a job to convince them that I like it. PS I love the answers on this thread, so many of you have interesting stories. I'm never bold enough to ask, but I do enjoy hearing about a person's cultural history. <em>edited by Aleta on 12/10/2011</em>

My mother is half-Devonshire, half-Irish and her parents met at the Royal Palace in Madrid, where they worked for the King and Queen of Spain. They emigrated to France at the time of the revolution in Spain and then settled in England, running a sweetie-shop. My father was Breton, though born in Fez, as his father was a military man, and he met my mother when he went to work in the French Section of the BBC World Service. So I'm a bit of a mixture, born in the London suburbs, lived and worked in London, Belgium, France, New York and Geneva. Married to a Greek, with a daughter who is more Swiss than anything else. Second year in Dubai and still amazed to be here - admittedly, we are amongst those who manage to live in a little ex-pat bubble.
