I know that these are really unhealthy because they are high in sodium and contain MSG. But what can be used as a substitute? Does anyone know?

Hate to tell you but the Kallo stock cubes also contain MSG. It is "hydrolyzed vegetable protein". Many products say no added MSG but it is still in there just under a different name. MSG is hidden in almost all processed foods nowadays under a shocking number of names. Here is a list for your reference. http://www.rense.com/general35/hidd.htm I agree with previous poster.....homemade stock is the only way to go! I simmer mine for a long time though to get all of the goodness out of the bones. Oh no! This is bad news!!

Buy chicken carcass from Organic Supermerkey ( i pay around 10 dhs for 4). Rinse them under cold water and pt them in a big pot with cold water to boil . Soon a foam it will form at the surface, remove it and trow it . Try to remove as much foam you can. Take 2 onions , 2 carots and few celery stalks or celery root , cut them in big pices and add them to the pot. Take 3-4 cardamons seeds, 3-4 cloves , black pepercorn, 2 bay leaves, fresh tyme and add them to the pot . Reduce the fire to min. and simmer for 1h and have to 2h. When is done, , remove the bones and filter the soup . Voila , you have chicken stock or you can transform this in a cicken soup with the result . Freez it in small portion and use them instead of the Maggie cubes. Same rules aply for beef or lamb stock just add extra cinamon and all spices. You could do it every Saturday so you will have a stock for the whole week .

Thanks for all the responses. I don't cook myself but my maid does. My DH and kids eat Emirati food most nights which includes stews and biryanis. I told my maid I would no longer buy those Maggi chicken cubes but she thinks I'm just being difficult so I am trying to find her a solution. I wish I knew how to make it myself. Then I could show my maid how to do it. Unfortunately, I have the knowledge of a preschooler when it comes to cooking. :( edited by AnonDubai on 26/04/2012

Irooni - yes. it's on the ingredients list. AD - the truly healthy option is to make your own chicken stock. and you can freeze small portions to use it.

You can buy Kallo Yeast free stock cubes at Spinneys, Choithrams, or my fave, C4! Oh, all the Kallo stock cubes are veggie too! I made veggie DH some jasmine rice in the Kallo yeast free stock cube recently and it came out really yummy, not too dissimilar to rice cooked in a Maggi stock cube. There's also a low-salt version of the Maggi chicken cubes, it has Arabic writing in turquoise across the label.HTH :)
