Hi,
I am moving back to Canada in about a week. I was wondering if I could take my spices with me? I checked online and it does seem to say that spices are OK to bring. I cant send them in my cargo cuz they wont take it. I jus thought that Iwould put them in my suitcase. I ve got quite a lot and dont want to just throw them away.
any suggestioins?

If puppy is on your flight you collect him/her at customs/baggage collection, take him to the Dept of Agriculture section (you will be told where) they check the paperwork and the condition of the pup, collect CAD50 (or so it was several years ago) and you go on your way. They were very professional and kind towards puppy. edited by marycatherine on 24/06/2011 ETA timing takes just that much longer than collecting your bags (and you are with them) maybe 30 minutes when I went through? edited by marycatherine on 24/06/2011

Sorry to hijack your thread Mahat - but we are moving in about 3 weeks as well to Canada and I had similar questions to yourself. With giving the list to customs when we arrive - anyone know how long this process will take - it is just that our puppy will be traveling on the same flight with us as excess baggage and after a 15 hour flight we will want to collect him as soon as possible to make sure he is ok. Hadn't anticipated that we might be held up at customs - anyone know what the process is? TIA

Snowgal are you talking about the cargo which will arrive in about 6 weeks? We have to tell them at the airport it willbe following us but I should also take a list you mean? So I am guessing spices are out of question:(. If anyone needs them please let me know. I am in the executive towers, Tower F.

And how long will you spend explaining why you didn't declare them if you get picked for a random check or something else flags you as you go through? Foodstuffs are required to be declared to customs - I've brought pistachios, herbs, etc. back but I always tell them and have never been stopped. Don't forget the little beagles in their green uniforms - they are used quite frequently. And they do their sniffing after you go through customs. They've flagged me in Montreal - kept sitting down next to my suitcase. The inspector kept asking if I had food (I didn't) but I explained my cat likes to sit/sleep in the suitcase anytime it is open. He never askedme to open the bag. edited by marycatherine on 15/06/2011

If they are opened, forget about it. They will confiscate them. But you can bring in pretty much anything as long as it's in the manufacturer's package and unopened. A little tip if you have other belonging joining you back in Canada (shipped). Make sure you have a list of the items. It will make things a whole lot easier at custom for you. If not, they will either tax you for the items you haven't declared upon your arrival in Canada when you collect your shipment, or custom will ask you to sit down and write a list of the items being sent upon your arrival in Canada. Which isn't funny when you're jet lagged and handling small children.

Partially used ones. I have about 20 ikea bottles and it would be a waste to throw them away. It would be esaier for me to just put them all in a suitcase and take them with me.

Are you talking about sealed packages or partially used ones? I suspect if it is the latter customs may not be happy as they have no guarantees they haven't been rampered with

I recently took several kilos of mixed masalas from carrefour, back home to the States. I put them in my luggage and had no problems whatsoever, apart from everything in my luggage smelling of curry, even after triple bagging everything lol

I brought spices home from Egypt before & just declared them at airport when I arrived home and it was fine! 'home' isn't Canada though but would suggest declaring them & if they're not happy they'll just take them away. Better to have tried than not bring them at all :)
