Can anyone tell me more about ticks? I've just found one crawling around the kitchen, not for the first time either. The dog seems clear and we never find them anywhere else in the house, so why the kitchen which has no soft furnishings etc?

Also, I think she picks them up from the bushes in our main garden - she's not allowed out there very often, as we restrict her to the side garden where there are no plants/grass for her to damage. On the rare occasion she has been out the back, I have found a tick on her a couple of days later.

What are these ticks living on in the garden between dog visits, and how do I get rid of them? She wears a Preventic collar and is treated with the vet's Frontline equivalent, but they don't seem to be 100% effective.

Also, do ticks have a season? Will they die off in the winter?

What is the name of the nasty tick disease and what are the symptoms?

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

And if you have the house treated it will have to be done 3 times (I believe) about 30 days apart to make sure you get all the ticks in their various life stages to ensure they are gone for good. (egg, first life stage and second live stage - the latter being when they latch onto your furry friend).

Because ticks are so prevalent here, the vets recommend it be applied monthly rather than 3 monthly. Not sure if it was what you did anyway, just a thought. Yep...all of the dogs in K9 are treated monthly. They have dozens of dogs and never a tick. Some of the poor pups that come in from the street are absolutely covered in them. Once we had a pup who had so many ticks he couldn't see. :( Those spot-on-the-neck treatments work brilliantly, if applied monthly. Getting them out of the house...you may need to investigate 'safe' pest control for your home.

Ticks I tend to find don't actually like soft furnishing. They like to hide in skirting boards and door cracks and the like. The ticks here are evil things and difficult to get rid of. Get a good tick collar for the dog, I've found frontline and the spot on insecticides are pretty useless with them here. Plus be vigilant in your home, burn them or drown them when you find them and bug bomb if necessary.
